WVILLIAM H. SLEETH, OF OSKALOOSA, IOWVA.
CHAIR-LEG FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,781, dated December 26, 1899.
Application filed IEebruary 25, 1899. Serial No. 706,854. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SLEETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chair-Leg Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and improved construction of fastening device for securing the legs of chairs, tables, and the like, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple device which will prevent the leg rotating in the socket and becoming loose.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View, the leg being shown in section; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the fastening-plate.
In carrying out my invention I employ an essentially U shaped or rectangular plate A, made of thin metal, and having an inwardlyprojecting prong B at its bow end, the inner face of the side members being beveled, as
shown at O, in order to cut into the edges of the leg D when the plate is forced into such position as to project the prong into the leg of the chair. series of openings E,th rough which the screws F pass for the purpose of secu ring the plate to the bottom of the chair or table. By means of the beveled inner edges and the prong entering the leg it will be impossible for said leg to rotate in the socket or to move longitu dinally therein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
As a new article of manufacture a chair or table leg fastener consisting of a substantially U-shaped flat plate struck from a single piece of sheet metal, having an inwardlyprojecting prong at the bow portion and the inner edges of the respective side members beveled to form sharp edges said inner edges being approximately the same distance apart as the diameter of the leg substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM H. SLEETH.
