Be it known that LHERMANN P.KAUFMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising and Display Cards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof.

My invention relates to advertising devices or to devices for displaying advertising matter or small articles of merchandise in an attractive form. Its main object is to attract attention and awaken curiosity.

It consists, essentially, of an extensible card composed of two sections having sliding connections with each other, as hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings like letters and numerals designate the same parts in the several figures.

Figure 1 is a face view of a card embodying the invention in its closed form. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same in its open or extended form. Fig. 3 is a back view of the card when closed, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detached views of the component sections of the device.

The card, which may be made of heavy paper, cardboard, or other analogous or suitable material, consists of two sections A and B. The section A is formed in one half or part, with two longitudinal slits 1 1 near and parallel with its longer sides. It is also formed in the other half or part with two longitudinal slits 2 2. These slits, which are somewhat farther from the edges of the section than the slits 1 1, are primarily cut through one end of the section, as shown in Fig. 5, and are extended outwardly at their inner ends in lateral or transverse offsets 3 3, which terminate approximately in line with the slits 1 1. At the end through which the slits 2 2 are cut short transverse slits 4 4 are cut into section A, forming the transverse or laterally-projecting ears a co. Section B is reduced in width for apart of its length by notches or recesses 5 5 out into its longer sides, as shown in Fig. 4. These notches or recesses form or leave transverse or laterally-projecting ears I) b at the narrower end thereof. This section is formed in its wider half orportion with two longie tudinal slits 6 6, and between its wider and narrower parts with a transverse slit 7.

The sections are assembled, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, by inserting the part of section A between the slits 2 2 through the trans verse slit 7 in section B and passing the narrower part of section B through the offsets 3 3 of the slits 2 2 in section A. The parts of section A adjoining the slits 2 2 will lie behind section B and the narrower part of section B will lie behind section A, as shown in Fig. 3. The ears a a of section A are tucked through the slits 6 6 of section B and the ears I) b of section B are tucked through the slits 1 1 of section A, and thus serve to guide and hold the sections in their proper relation to each other. After the parts are assembled, as above explained, the ends of the slits 2 2, which are cut through the end of section A, are closed by gummed patches 0 O, as shown in Fig. 3, or by other suitable means.

A card thus constructed affords inexpensive and attractive means of advertising or of displaying samples or small articles of merchandise. It may be used for orin connection with any-line of business. As illustrating the use of the card for advertising a particular line of business, such as pork-packing, Fig. 1 shows the representation of a hog printed upon the card when it is closed orin its condensed form, and upon the part or parts of the card which are uncovered when it is opened or extended, as shown in Fig. 2,are printed or otherwise represented the products which are made from hogs, such as pork, ham, sausages, and lard. The printed or other matter and the manner of applying it to the device form no part of the invention claimed herein, the illustration above mentioned being simply for the purpose of more clearly explaining the purpose and operation of the card as a mechanical device.

I claim- 1. An extensible advertising and display card consisting of two plain sections each formed with parallel longitudinal slits and at or near one end with transverse ears which are adapted to be tucked through and to slide in the longitudinal slits of the other section,

substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. An extensible card composed of two sections each formed with longitudinal slits and with ears inserted and adapted to slide in the slits of the other section, one section having a transverse slit through which a part of the other section is inserted and adapted to slide, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. An extensible card composed of two sections each having longitudinal slits extending a part of its length, and two oppositely-projecting transverse ears at or near one end, the ears of one section being inserted and adapted to slide in the slits of the other section, and one section having a transverse slit through which a part of the other section is inserted and adapted to slide, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. An extensible card composed of two sections each formed with longitudinal slits and with transverse ears inserted and adapted to slide in the slits of the other section, one section being of reduced Width for a part of its length and having a transverse slit, a pair of the slits in the other section being cut pri marily through one end thereof and having outwardly-turned oifsets to permit the passage of the narrower portion of the first section through the second section, and the part of the second section between its oflset slits being inserted through the transverse slit in the first section, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
