Description

nitrh tetra strut fiftee WILLIAM CRAWFORD, OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 63,862, dated April 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM GATES.,
tits fitlgchnle trtttret in in time ittttert $211M amt muting pct at the amt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. CRAWFORD, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Farm Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a front view of the device for raising the gate.
Figure 2, a transverse sectioh of the same attached to the post to which the gate is to be hung.
Figure 3, a front view of the gate nearly closed. 7
Figure 4, a slide-latoh for the purpose of holding the gate in'position when open.
Figure 5, the lever-wheel by means of which the gate is elevated; and
Figure 6 the block K, placed under the centre of the gate upon which the gate rests and slides in opening and closing.
Letter A represents a post, to whiclrI attach board P, with a tongue on each edge. Upon this I place the slide B, which works on slides on theai'oresaid tongues. I also fasten to the back of board P the lever-wheel J,
which I connect with the lower end of slide B by means of a strip ofhoop-iron or its equivalent, passed over the wheel J, as appears by reference to fig. 5. To the slide B I hang the board 0, with strap hinge-s or their equivalent, and upon this board 0 I fasten the arm G, and the roller F, as shown by fig. 3, the roller rising a trifle above arm G, so as to enable the gate I) to roll back upon it. I make the gate I) as represented by fig. 3, with a notch, H, a few inches to the right of the centre, so that when the gate is pushed back on the block K and roller F, it will balance and rest on the arm G, and by a slight shove it can be turned oil at right angles and held in position by means of the slide-latch O, as represented by fig. 4, which is fastened to the opposite edge of slide B, fig. 1. The gate D may be raised any height desired by turning down the lever I. The lever may be held in any position by inserting a pin through a hole bored through the lever-wheelJ near its edge into the slide B. l The handle of the lever J, when the gate is down, stands upright with the post, and when the gate is elevated to the proper height it can be carried forward to the gains L L, and remain in that position for. the purpose of allowing small stock to pass under it. I secure the gate to the board 0 bymeans of the cleat'E, and I keep the gate closed by means of the spring-latch N. I make the block K of wood, with notch ontop and in centre tapering oit' to each end, so that the ends are even with the surface of the ground, and fasten the block to the ground by means of wooden pins or their equivalent, as represented by fig. 6, which bl ck is so constructed as to prevent its being displaced by farm rollers or wagonspassing over it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Tlle lever-wheel J, tongue-board P, slide B, in combination with board 0 and block K, substantially as shown and described for the purpose set forth.
w. M. CRAWFORD.
