LIFE-PRESERVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,872, dated November 28, 1899.
Application iiled July 21, 1899. Serial No. 724,719. (No model.)
LifeBelts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to a life-belt, with a number of flat metal shells connected together by straps or belts, which shells are filled with elastic shells wherein smaller closed receptacles made of elastic material are placed. By means of this arrangement a much greater security is obtained than is possible with the known life-belts with single metal shellssuch, for example, as those described in the United States Patent Specification No. 436, 31S
and the British Patents Nos. 5,7l0and 14,061'
of 1S87-since the carrying or supporting power of the elastic shells and receptacles contained therein is not interfered with by damage to one of the metal shells.
In the accompanying drawings a life-belt of this kind is shown extended in Figures l and 2, in outside and inside elevation, respectively. Fig. 3 shows a transverse section through the extended life-belt. Fig. 4 shows the life-belt' fastened to the body. Fig. 5 shows one of the metal shells in elevation. Fig. 6 is a vertical section; Fig. 7, a vertical transverse section taken on line a; m of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 a horizontal section taken on line a' z of said Fig. 6.
The life-belt consists, essentially, of' a number of flat metal shells A, which are connected together by Vstraps or belts. In the arrangement shown in Figs. l and 2 the metal shells A are placed in separate pockets. They can, however, be also secured directly to the connecting straps or belts.
The fiat metal shells A, fitting the curvature of the body, are provided with an opening D for inserting long shells B, which are madeof elastic material and are filled with smaller cylindrical, spherical, or otherwise suitably formed receptacles C, which are like- Wise elastic. By reason of this arrangement section, and of less diameter than length and width, said cases united at one end by a Waist-belt, and near the other by an encom-A passing strap, in combination with flexible cellular cases filling said metallic cases, for4 the purpose set forth.
2. A life-preserver comprising a series of metallic cases concavo-convex in horizontal section and of less diameter than length and width, those cases on a line with the armpits shorter than the others, said cases united at oneend by a waist-loelt and near the opposite end by an encompassing strap, in combination with cellular flexible cases filling said metallic cases and having cells of dierent internal areas, for the purpose set forth.
3. A life-preserver comprising a series of metallic cases concavo-convex in horizontal section and of less diameter than length and width, a suitable pocket for each ofsaid cases, a Waist-belt uniting said cases at one end, and an encompassing strap uniting the same near their opposite end, those cases in line with the armpits shorter than the others, in combination with flexible cases filling said metallic cases and filled with flexible cases forming air-chambers, for the purpose set forth.
4E. A life-preserver comprising a series of metallic cases concavo-convex in horizontal section and of less diameter than length and width, a suitable pocket for each of said cases,
a waist-belt uniting said cases at one end and an encompassing strap uniting the same at their opposite end, those cases in line with the armpits shorter than the others, in combination with flexible cases filling said metallic cases, and filled with fiexible cases forming air-chambers of diierent capacities, for the purpose set forth.

5. A life-preserver comprising a plurality filled with closed exible or elastic cellular of interconnected metallic shells each conbodies, for the purpose set forth. 1o taining a plurality of flexible or elastic shells In testimony whereof I aflx my signature filled with closed cellular bodies, for the purin presencek of two Witnesses. 5 pose set forth. FRIEDRICH WILHELM JURGSCHAT.
G. A life-preserver comprising a plurality Vitnesses: of interconnected metallic shells each con- RICHARD O. POLOWITZ, taining a plurality of fieXible or elastic shells CARL PODAOK.
