Abstract

1531268 Splints G W JOHNSON 15 Dec 1975 51308/75 Heading A5R A tubular splint or body part casing comprises two shell members 12, 14 which can be adjustably fitted one within the other to enclose the body part, means 44, 54, 57 for securing the members together and circumferentially disposed inflatable pneumatic cells 30 which in use are disposed between the shells and the body part. The shell members 12, 14 are generally semi-cylindrical and made of thermoplastic material, apertures 24 arranged in columns longitudinally of the members and runs circumferentially of the members being so spaced that they may be easily flexed about longitudinal axes so that the side edges of one member 14 may be disposed between the side edges of the other 12 when the members are disposed about a limb. Air bags 30 having air inlet tubes 32 are disposed against the inner surface of each member and are inflated to space each shell member from the limb. The outer surface of each bag 30 may be covered with an absorbent material to aid ventilation. In use, the shells are intended to make indirect abutting engagement with the limb in selected regions i.e. the shell engages the limb indirectly through an intermediate layer or layers of material other than fluid e.g. portions of the pneumatic cells in flattened condition.
