  • Our invention relates to improvements in detachable carrying-brackets for bicycles; and the object of the invention is to devise an extremely simple and convenient device which may be detachably fitted to the handle-bar in an instant and utilized for carrying bags and parcels without marring either the handle-bar or standard; and it consists, essentially, of a double spring-metal loop provided with forwardly-extending arms having peculiarly-formed end hooks, the inner end of the loop being preferably covered with leather and having a depending apron, the said loop being fitted onto the bicycle in the manner hereinafter more particularly explained.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS MOPHERSON BULEY and WILLIAM WELLINGTON WAGG, students, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Carrying-Brackets for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in detachable carrying-brackets for bicycles; and the object of the invention is to devise an extremely simple and convenient device which may be detachably fitted to the handle-bar in an instant and utilized for carrying bags and parcels without marring either the handle-bar or standard; and it consists, essentially, of a double spring-metal loop provided with forwardly-extending arms having peculiarly-formed end hooks, the inner end of the loop being preferably covered with leather and having a depending apron, the said loop being fitted onto the bicycle in the manner hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the handle-bar and portion of the front standard of the bicycle provided with our improved detachable carrying-bracket. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the straps attached to the bracket-adapted to carry a parcel.

A is the handle-bar of the bicycle, and B the standard, to which it is suitably attached at the top.
0 is the detachable bracket, which is formed with a loop a at the bottom side, loops 0 c extending upwardly therefrom on each side,
and the ofiset arms 6 0 extending slantingly upward and provided at the ends with the substantially rectangularly-formed hooks c 0 The loop portion is preferably covered with leather or rubber tubular covering 0 as indicated, and the front of the loop has connected to it an apron 0 which protects the standard from abrasion by the parcel carried. The portion between the end of the loops 0 and the back portion of the loop 0 c" is a spring portion and is designed to securely grip the handle-bar on each side of the standard, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In order to place our deviceinpositiomthe loop is turned upside down and the arms passed to each side of the standard beneath the handle-bar and the lower part of the loop passed over the top of the handle-bar. By swinging the arms forwardly they pass over the top of the handle-bar and assume the position shown in Fig. 1, the apron c extending down in front of the standard and the bottom front portion of the loop 0 embracing the front of the standard, while the sideloops c embrace the handle-bar, as indicated.
- In Fig. 1 we show in dotted lines our bracket adapted to carry a satchel. In Fig. 2 also the exact position and shape of the bracket are shown adapted to carry the satchel. In Fig. 3 the exact form will be understood, and in Fig. 4 the bracket is shown adapted to carry a parcel, the straps D D being provided with looped ends (1 (1, adapted to be passed over and held in the hooked ends of the offset arms c 0 It will be noticed, of course, that our detachable bracket is-made in one piece of suitable thickness of wire and, beinglcovered with rubber or leather, will not mar or otherwise blemish the handle-bar, nor will the articles carried abrade or otherwise injure the standard, as the projecting apron effectually prevents this.
What we claim as our invention is- 1. A carrying-bracket for bicycles comprising a central spring-loop adapted to grip the bicycle-head, vertical spring-loop portions adapted to grip the handle-bar on each side of the head and spring-arms extending for- Ward from said vertical loops having reversely-turned hooked ends, said arms being adapted to be pressed toward each other to engage the package, and to spring apart to grip the same;
2. A carrying-bracket having loop portions engaging the bicycle and carrying-arms,a covering extending around said loop portion and an apron forming a continuation of said covering, said apron depending from the loop portion of the carrier in front of the bicyclehead and to the rear of the package-support-- ing ends of said arms.
