SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,697, dated November 21, 1899.

Be it known that I, GRACE BARTLETT, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription..

The object of the invention is to providea simple and economic paper box especially adapted for the transportation of flowers, and to so construct the box that the flowers when laid therein will not need a packing of tissuepaper, moss, or other material at the blossoms, the arrangement of the body being such that when the flowers are properly placed therein and the cover of the box laid upon the body the flowers will be protected from any movement likely to injure them.

The invention consists in the novel con-' struction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is made.

The blank consists of a large panel 10, adapted to form the bottom of the box, and two

11 and 12 The side panel 11 is provided near one end with a transverse slot 13, meeting at the top an inwardly-inclined slot 13, and a similar transverse slot 14 is made in the panel 11 near its opposite end, the upper portion of the slot 14 meeting an inwardly-inclined slot 14. The side panel 12 is likewise provided with a transverse slot 15 near one end, meeting at the top an inwardly-inclined slot 15, while duplicate

16 and 16 are produced at the opposite end'of the said panel 12. An end panel 17 is separated from the panel 10 by a score-line 17, and a locking-tab 18, provided with a head 18 is formed at each side of the end panel 17, said tabs being separated from said end panel by score-lines 18". At the opposite end of the panel 10 asecond end panel 19 is formed, separated from the panel 10 by a score-line 19 and locking-tabs 20, provided with locking-heads 20, extend from the ends of the end panel 19, being separated therefrom by score-lines 19 A narrow panel 21 is formed at the outer longitudinal side of the panel 19, being separated from said panel 19 by a score-line 21 and lips 22 are formed at the ends of the narrow panel 21, separated by score-lines 22 The blank is completed by the formation of a long panel 23 at the outer longitudinal edge of the short panel 21, and said panel 23 is separated from the panel '21 by a score-line 23*.

13 and 14 in the side panels at the outer faces of said panels, as shown particnlarlyin Fig. 1. Bythis means the ends and sides of the box are formed and securely locked together. Prior, however, to locking'the head end of the box the narrow panel 21 is bent downwardly and into an engagement with the inner face of the end 19 of the body of the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the lips 22, connected with the panel 21, are carried horizontallyiuto the space between the adjacent locking-tabs 20 and the outer face of the "sides of the box, thus holding the panel 21 in position, and finally the long panel 23 is curved in a downward direction, the curve being very decided adjacent to the lower edge of the narrow panel 21. The inner end of the panel 23 is made to bear on the bottom of the box usually at a point near the center, but preferably at a point between the center and opposite end of the box. The

concaved surface of the bottom panel 23 is its upper face.

In operation the blossoms of the flowers to be transported are made to rest upon the up per curved surface of the inner or bottom panel 23, and when the top is placed upon the box said top will have su fficient pressure upon the blossoms to prevent them from moving unduly or to any injurious extent, evenwere the box to be shaken in a violent manner.

having an inclined bottom panel extending from one end toward the central portion of the box and engaging with the bottom proper, the said panel terminating near the middle of bot tom proper as and-for the purpose specified.

A box provided with an inner panel provided with a concaved upper surface, which inner panel extends from a point between the top and bottom of one end of the box toan engagement with the inner face of the bottom of the box, and terminating at ornear the cenwhich box is provided with locking-tabs at its ends, one end of said box being provided with a panel that extends downwardly within the box in engagement with the'main e'nd panel, the downwardly-extendingpanel having a curved projecting member bearing :at its free end on the bottom of the box, said downwardly-extending panel being provided also with'lipjs that enter the spaces between the sealing-flaps and the side surfaces of the "boxbody, as described.

4. A blank for a paper box, consisting of a central panel, side and end panels, the side panels being provided withslots neartheir ends, and the end panels having at their ends locking-tabs.provided with locking-heads, a

narrow panel connected with the longitudinal edge of oneot' the end panels, the narrow panel having lips extending from its ends, and a long panelconneoted with-a longitudi .nal edge of said narrow panel, all of the pan {els and attachments being adapted for engagement, as, herein set forth.
