HARRY B. HANDLEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BOTTLE, JUG, JAR, R SIMILAR VESSEL WITH A NECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,459, dated November 21, 1899.
Application filed March 31, 1899. Serial No. 711,311. (No model.)
:0 and similar vessels have been .provided with a neck having an opening or mouth on the top and being closed or stopped by the covering or insertion of a cork, stopper, cap, or some other similar means or method, and in order to remove the latter instruments of the most varied kind and nature were in common use, oftentimes requiring the exertion of more than ordinary physical force. Besides that, it is common knowledge that such vessels can be filled and refilled by anybody by most primitive methods and means.
The object of my present invention is to so construct bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels having a neck that the opening or mouth on the top of such vessels is entirely done away with and with it the use of corks, stoppers, or caps of any kind or nature and instruments of removing the latter and that the process of refilling such vessels after consumption of the original contents by others than the owner of the original contents will be connected with such difficulties as to make the vessel of value only to said owner of the original contents. To this end the neck of 3 5 the vessel has integral therewith three roundedged projections, causing thereby two distinct recesses, the middle projection being a trifle larger in its circumference, the top proj ection being of equal circumference with the lowermost projection, forming, however, a
solid top. Within the recess of the-top and the second projection are three openings of equal size and equally distributed around the circumference of the narrower neck (or neck 5 proper) of the vessel, one permitting the passing of air, the others permitting the egress and ingress of liquid. A flexible band resting within the recess formed by the middle and lower projection is pulled over the said middle projection into the recess above, causing a constriction around the narrower neck of said recess, closing said three openings therein hermetically.
The nature of my said invention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the Vessel hermetically closed. A is the flexible band, B showing the lower recess.
Fig. 2 represents the vessel opened. A is the flexible band, resting in the lower recess,
B showing the three openings, 0 showing the spaces between the openings as far as visible on the drawings.
Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of the vessel, B showing the openings, A the flexible band, resting in the lower recess, and O the inner wall of the vessel.
Fig. 4 represents the flexible band.
What I claim as new is- 1. The bottle, jug, jar and similar vessels with a neck above described having three projections, the first projection forming a solid top of the vessel, these three projections causing two distinct recesses, one of which is provided with opening into the bottle and a band or its equivalent adapted to shift from one recess to the other and to hermetically close said openings, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The bottle, jug, jar and similar vessels with a'neck above described having a recess on the neck of the Vessel, a solid top, openings in said recess and a band or its equivalent movable into and out of said recess and adapted to close said openings hermetically, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The bottle, jug, jar and similar vesselswith a neck having therein a plurality of openings and integrally thereon a plurality of circumferential projections, an intermediate projection being larger than the extreme projections and a shiftable band adapted to hermetically close said opening, as and for the purposes set forth.
HARRY .B. HANDLEY.
