PUZZLE.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SoHUG, a

citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in games and toys, and relates more particularly to that class known as puzzles.

The herein-described puzzle belongs to that class in which a ring is inserted in or between two or more sections and where the solution of the puzzle consists in the removing of the ring and replacing the same in its former position.

The invention has for its object to construct a puzzle of the above-rcferred-to class that will be extremely simple to solve when properly manipulated, yet a very difficult problem in case a course is pursued other than will be hereinafter set forth.

The invention further aims to construct a puzzle the solution of which cannotbe forced, and with this object in View all the sections are stamped out of flat metal.

Another object of the invention is to construct a puzzle of the above-referred-to class that will possess advantages in points of simplicity, strength, and durability; furthermore, one that can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.

Theinvention, briefly described, consists of the letters U S S O A, (United StateS Of America,) the aforesaid letters U S S A being linked together in a manner to form three sections, and the letter O which constitutes a removable ring.

The invention further consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which=- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved puzzle, showing all parts in their proper position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, illustrating the second position of the parts when solving the puzzle. Fig. 3 is a similar view representing the different parts in the third position to solve the puzzle. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ring when removed from the three sections.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates the letter S; 2, the inverted S. These letters are apertured near their free ends and are connected together by links 3 engaging the apertures formed in the upper ends of the letters S S, the said letters forming the first or top section of the puzzle. The lower ends of the letters S S are provided with links l through the apertures; Said links carry the letter U, which is in= dicated by the reference-numeral 5, said letter U being likewise apertured near the upper free ends and adapted to receive the said links 4. A link 6 is slidingly secured upon the said letter U 5, which carries the letter A, said letter A 7 being similarly apertured at its upper extremity to receive the said link 6. The letter O or ring 8 is so arranged as to fit over the letter A, the inner diameter of said ring being less than the width of the lower portion of the letterA.

The operation of my improved puzzle is as follows: For the purpose of illustration it will be presumed that all parts are in position, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and it is desired to solve the puzzle. The upper or top section, comprising S 1 and S 2,is folded over upon the second section, comprising the letter U. The top section will then assumea position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, from which position the link 6, carrying the letter A, upon which is loosely arranged the letter O or ring 8, is moved to a position at the end or the upper extremity of the letter U, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. From this position the letter O or ring is removed from the letter A and may be easily passed over the inverted S 2 and down to the lower-extremity of the letter U, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. From this position the letter O or ring may be further manipulated upwardly around the S 1 and the U-shaped section to a position at the upper extremity of the said U-shaped section, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. From this position the letter O or ring may be easily removed.
