EXTENSION-TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,272, dated November 21, 1899. Application led June 24, 1899. Serial No. 721,777. (No model.)

Be it known that I, HANS MAHNOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Extension-Table, of which the following is a specification.

Theinvention relates to improvements in extension-tables.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of extension-tables and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one capable of being readily extended without the addition of extra leaves or sections and adapted to be reduced in size without removing such leaves or sections.

A further object of the invention is to provide a table of this character which may be extended while dishes or other articles are on it without removing the same therefrom and which may be compactlyfolded for shipping.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a reverse plan view of an extension-table constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the table being extended. Fig. 4. is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the corners of the rectangular frame which forms the side and end rails of the table. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the upper end of one of the legs. Fig.'v 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the outer arms which engage the slides of the extensible leaves or sections.

1 designates a rectangular' frame forming the side and end rails of the table and having its sides 2 connected bya horizontal transverse bar or board 3, which is provided at its ends with perforations through which pass depending rods 4. The rods Li, which are vertical, depend from a central section 5 of the table, being secured to the same by plates 6 or other suitable means, and the lower por- Ations of the rods have coiled springs 7 disposed on them and interposed between the lower face of the transverse bar or board and suitable stops 8. gaged by the lower ends of the coiled springs,

consist of pins or keys passing through perforations of the lower ends ofthe rods. The coiled springs hold the central section 5 of the top of the table rmly against the upper edges of the horizontal frame l when the table is extended, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, and they clamp the same against extension leaves or sections 9 when the latter are folded, as shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The extensible leaves or sections 9 are provided at opposite sides of the table with slides 10 and ll, consisting of bars secured` to the lower faces of the sections 9 and extending from the inner edges thereof, as clearly shown in Fig.Y 1 of the'drawings. The transverse bar or piece which connects the sides of the rectangular frame is provided in its upper face with recesses l2 to form ways for the inner portions of the slides l0 and 1l, and the ends 13 of the rectangular frame are provided at their upper edges with notches 14 to guide the slides 10` and ll.

The slides l0, which are arranged at the inner edges of the slides ll, are provided at their inner faces with longitudinal grooves or rabbets l5, arranged at their inner faces and engaged by L-shaped arms 16 of castings l7, and the outer slides l1 are correspondingly grooved or rabbeted at 18 and are engaged by horizontal arms 19 lof castings 20. The castings 17, which' are secured to one of the longitudinal edges of the bar or piece 3, have Shanks or plates, which are perforated for the reception of screws or other suitable fastening devices and which are arranged horizontally, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The other castings 2O are provided wit-h vertical Shanks or bars, which are secured by screws or other suitable fastening devices to the inner faces of the sides of the rectangular frame l. The castings or brackets 17 and 20 retain the slides in the recesses of the transverse piece 3, and the slides are provided at their inner ends with suitable stops 21 and 22, consisting of screws and arranged to be ent IOO gaged by the arms of the brackets or castings to prevent the sliding leaves or sections from being drawn outward too far.

When the sliding leaves are drawn outward toward a point beyond the central section, the latter is drawn downward by the coiled springs and is supported by the upper edges of the rectangular frame, the leaves or sections of the table being all in the saine plane, as shown in Fig. 3. Then it is desired to return the sliding leaves or sections to aposition beneath the central leaf or section, the latter is raised and the former are moved inward beneath the same, and it will be apparent that the change may be made to increase or reduce the size of the table without interfering with articles arranged on the central section.

The corners of the rectangular frame are provided with recesses or cut-away portions 23 and have legs 2i interlocked with them, and the said legs,\vhich are readily removable, are provided at their upper ends with grooves 25, L-shaped in horizontal section, receiving the recessed portions of the frame 1. The legs are secured to the frame l'by screws or other suitable fastening devices, which may be readily Withdrawn when it is desired to remove the legs, and the latter may be compactly arranged Within the rectangular frame when it is desired to store or ship the table.

The invention has lthe following advantages: The table, which is simple, inexpensive, strong, and durable, presents a neat and attractive appearance, and it may be readily extended Without affecting dishes or other articles arranged on the central section. When the extensible leaves are drawn outward, their upper faces are arranged in the same plane as the central section, and when 4o folded beneath the same they are practically concealed and are always in position for immediate use. The legs may be readily removed from the rectangular frame and arranged therein to fold the table compactly for shipping or storing.

Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What is claimed is- A table comprising a frame, a central section yieldingly connected with the frame, the extensible leaves arranged at the ends of the table, the slides arranged in pairs at the sides of the table and projecting from the .inner edges of the leaves, the members of each pair of slides having their inner faces arranged to bear against each other and provided at their outer faces with longitudinal grooves, and the brackets provided with arms arranged at the outer faces of the slides and engaging the grooves, substantially as described.
