ELECTRIC LIGHTING ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-FIXTURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,058, dated November 14, 1899. Application filed February 27, 1899. Serial No. 706,985. (No model.)

Be it known that I, CHARLES DJWRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Lighting Attachments for Gas-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in an attachment for gas-fixtures to be employed for lighting the gas by means of electricity; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for the reception and retention of a number of electric batteries, which attachment shall be simple and inexpensive in construction', attractive in appearance, and readily applied to the gas-fixture. V
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a chandelier with my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View, partlyin section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the receptacle for the batteries, showing the manner of securing it to the gaspipe. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 5 is a view of the gas-burner with an igniter applied thereto; and Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of a modification in the construction of my attachment, showing it applied to a gas-fixture for the wall.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
A represents a casing, which may be made of any suitable size, form, and material, but preferably of metal and cylindrical in shape, as shown in the drawings. This casing is divided vertically, as at a, so that it may be sprung apart in order to be placed in position on the gas-pipe B of the gas-fixture or chandelier. Secured to the inner surface of the casing A near its upper end is a clamp C,
preferably made of flexible material, whose prongs c and c extend diametrically across the casing and are secured on each side of the division a in the casing, as is clearlyshown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The middle of the prongs or pieces/o and c is provided with bends c to fit around the gaspipe B, said prongs or pieces being secured in such position by means of the screw cl passing therethrough and nut 61 on its end. The lower end of the casing A is closed by means of a bottom D, which is preferably made in two sections e and 6, each of which has a downwardly-extending semicircular portion 6 to fit around the gas-pipe B, as shown in Figs. 65 3 and t of the drawings. The periphery of the bottom D is provided with an upturned flange e 'to receive the lower end of the easing A, and the.curved portions e are held in position on the pipe B by means of a clamp composed of two pieces g and g, secured together near their ends with screws 71; or otherwise. The gas jet or burner I-I may be provided with an igniter of the ordinary or any desired construction; but in Fig. 5 of the 75 drawings I have shown one form of such igniter which may be used in connection with my attachment and which consists of a piece of platinum 7t, secured near the tip of the burner to a metallic band h, which is insu- 8Q lated from the burner and to which one end of the electric wire iis connected. Pivotally secured on the burner is a bell-crank lever H, which has on one of its arms a platinum wire 7L2 to contact with the wire or point h. The other arm of the lever H has secured thereto a cord or chain 77, for operating the lever to cause the two points It and h to contact to produce a spark when desired. Secured at one of its ends to the burner or jet H is a spring 77/, whose other end is secured to one of the arms of the lever H, and which spring-is employed to retract said lever.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modification in the construction of my attachment, which consists in providing a casing A for the reception of a number of electric batteries and a coil, which casing may be of any desired size, form, and material and may be secured to the gas-pipe B, which in this instance is a wallfixture, by means of a bail b or other supporting device.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the bottom of the casing is provided with an opening 1) for the passage of the electric conducting-wire i, which is connected at one of its ends to one of the batteries I, which are located in the receptacle or casing A and may be of any suitable number. These batteries are connected with one another by means of wires 1; and with a coil 1', which coil is connected with the casing A, when of metal, by means of a wire i which casing, together with the gas-pipe, forms one of the conductors for the electric current.
The operation of my attachment is as follows: The sections e and 6, comprising the bottom of the casing, are placed at a desired point on the gas-pipe B and there secured by means of the clamping-pieces g and g and The casing A is then sprung open at its point of division a, so that the gaspipe may be inserted between the pieces a and 0 until it reaches the curved parts 0 thereof, when said pieces may be secured together by means of the screw-bolt d, and the casing then placed in position on the bottom D, which supports it, as well as the batteries. The conducting-wire 11 is then passed through the opening I) in the bottom D and connected to the metallic band 72. on the gas jet or burner. hen arranged as above described, it is apparent that the casing A, bottom D, and gaspipe B will constitute one of the conductors, while the wire i, which is insulated, will comprise the other one. By pulling on the cord or chain 71. it .is evident that the lever H will be turned on its fulcrum, so that the point 7L2 thereof will contact with the point h, thus creating a spark when it is desired to ignite the gas.
When the modification shown in Fig. 6 and above described is employed, the conducting wire i leading from the coil, may be connected to the gaspipe B and the wire 1' to the metallic band h, surrounding the gas jet or burner, in which construction the mode of lighting the gas is the same as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a gas-pipe, of a metallic bottom comprising two sections secured thereon, a metallic casing having a vertical division located around the gas-pipe and resting on said bottom, a clamp secured to the inner surface of the upper portion of the casing and having means to secure it on the gaspipe, a battery and a coil located in said casing and electric connections uniting the battery and the gas-burner, and the coil and gaspipe, respectively, and means to complete the electric circuit to produce a spark near the burner, substantially as described.
