Description

1942- A. CRUPI 2,304,302
PORTABLE GAS STOVE AND ELECTRIC HEATER Filed April 6, 1942 IN V EN TOR. AN TON/0 CAUPl.
4770/?NEY Patented Dec. 8, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOVE AND ELECTRIC PORTABLE. GAS S EATER 1 Claim.
This invention relates to heating devices, stoves and the like, and has particular reference to a device which functions as an electric heater or gas stove.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide practical heating means in situations in which, although having certain fuel supply facilities, such as gas and electric, actual heating sources have not been available. In other words, although such services had been installed, as for illuminating purposes, heating means, as for cooking or like purposes had not been available.
Travelers, for example, have frequently met with situations of the kind here indicated, and another of the objects of this invention is the provision of a combination heater by which either electrical energy or piped fuel gas may be immediately used for the desired purpose.
Yet another object of the present invention is to render the heating device, which is readily portable, compact and of relatively small size, that it may readily be carried within a part of an ordinary package, grip, valise or the like, the same not necessarily having the appearance of a gas stove or electric heater therein.
With the above indicated objects in view, as well as others which will hereinafter appear, the invention resides in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements, the essential features of which are herein described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the aforesaid device; and
Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof.
In said drawing, a top stand or grate I0, having some features like a, conventional gas stove, cooperates with a frame part I l, above a plate or receptacle portion i2, with a burner element H3.
in the capability of the device as a gas stove, the same is provided, on a gas pipe IS, with control means which include a handle l6, said pipe being attached to the frame ll of the burner l3, in a conventional manner as seen at a flange and nut arrangement ll.
Fuel gas may be supplied from any source, as through said pipe, or electrical energy, also from any source, as indicated above, through usual insulation 20, with its wiring, and concentric with the burner 13 is a heating coil, as shown, on an insulating bushing 22. The bushing 22, with its coil, is fastened by fixtures which include a polygonal element 23, with the members H, I2 and with the heating coil connects the line wiring, in a manner having some usual features.
Fast on an extension of the frame H, at the pipe I5, is a, fixture 25, in which the wires of the line 20 are disposed, and these wires thereat develop as shown, into terminals 26, 21 of the electric circuit.
Rigid with the stem of the valve handle I6, is a plug 30, and from this plug extend terminals 3!, which terminals cooperate with the terminals 26, 21, the latter being of arcuate configuration, the center of which is coaxial with the stem of the valve.
A flexible gas supply pipe may be a part of the assembly, this being for connection with the pipe I5, so that, as in the position of Fig. 1, or the full line position, gas is supplied to the burner l3. In this case the conductor line 20 may not be connected, therefore in this case the device is a gas stove only; but when the line 20 is connected with its source of current, and the pipe l5 has no connection, the device is an electric heater. The broken line position of Fig. 2 shows both lines shut off.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention and parts of the improvements may be used without others.
I claim:
In combination, a gas stove having a base, a burner carried thereby, afiat circular article support grate thereover, a frame connecting said base and burner, a gas pipe extending from said burner, said pipe having a control valve including a handle, a helically wound electric coil axially below said grate, an insulative block on said frame provided with extending terminals, conductors for said terminals and coil, and cooperating terminals carried by said handle and movable therewith to selectively engage the first named terminals.
