Lettere .Patent No. 63,689, dated April 9, 1867.
@in rigitule nient tu tu than @time @time ma making niet rt its smic.
TO4 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known that I, ROBERT BAIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pipe Wrenches or Tongs, of which the following is a full,v clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, forming part oi` this speciication, and in Whieh- Y Figure l represents a side view of a pipe wrench constructed according to my improvement, having 4a pipe in its grip or hold.
Figure 2, a back edge View of the same tool.
Figure 3, a transverse sectional view through the line :e :e: in g. il; and
Figure 4, an interior side view of the fixed jaw detached with its handle or lever.
lLike letters indicate like parts throughout the several guros.
The nature of my invention consists in oombinatiomwith a fixed jan and adjustably pivoted claw or jaw extended to ferm handles or levers, of a sliding strap and set or locking-screw arranged to pass through the claw and inner side' of the strap, into a female thread of which it tits, and through which when screwed down it projects and enters any. one of a series ciV ceuntersinks lor female centres made inthe inner side of the jaw on which the strap slides, said strap forming the pivoted attachment on which the elavv or .movable jaw works, and is connected with, (so as to admit of its ready detaehmentjor adj ustment a wedge or gib being preferably provided the sliding strap Within its outer side or face, to secure the connection of the tivo jaws when established, and to relieve the screw from strain.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents thc xed jaw, and B the movable one or claw, extended to form levers or handles, constituting what may be termed jnwdievers. The iixed jaw A is provided on its inner side or fece with a series of countersinks'or female centres, a, corresponding-to the required adjustment of the Wrench to suit a variety of sizes ofvpipe. Said javv may also have on one oi'- its outer edges or faces gauge marks, e, to indicate, thoproper position of the movable jaw or its sliding attachment for a given adjustment. On this stationary jaw A is arranged a-sliding strap, C, to the one side of which'is pivoted the adjustable jaw or claw B, being locked thereon by means of a removable set-screw, D, so that saidjclztiv may readily be adjusted er detached at pleasure. This screw D, while it secures in the place of a iixed rivet, the pivoted attachment of the movable jaw r claw, need not necessarily, or directly rather, be the pivot, in the strict senso of the terr. on' which said jaws turns, as the sliding strap C may be provided vvith a projecting socket, c, that forms n. bearing or fulcrum to the movable jemand through which the screw D ts and Works or screws. This pivoted attachment of the jaw to the slide adds materially'to the strength of the tool as compared with making the screw directly the pivot. The point of the screw D enters, when the adjustment is established,` either one of a series of eountcrsinks, a, which determines the proper position oi' the sliding strap Cfer a given adjustment, and that may readily be decided by gauge marks Zi, on the baal: edge of the-jaw A, and adjusting the sliding strap relatively thereto so as to bring the point of the slackeucd screw over the particular conntersink for a eertainadjustinent of the wrench. To relieve the screw D of strain, after the adjustment has been made, and to tighten up the connection of the sliding attachment to the adjustable jaw, a Wedge or bevel-faced gib, F, `is fit-ted in between the strap and stationary javi on-the side opposite to the screw.. This gib, on being slightly tapped or driven. up, not only secures the connection and: relieves the screw, but gives a rm and stable character to the wrench and scarcely or 'at all interferes with the adjustment or'detachment of the movable jaar, as a single tap on the one end of such gib frees it from lock ,on .the strap, when'thescreiv D may be slackened and the claw be adjusted or removed vat pleasure. By dispensing with a fixed rivet asa pivotto the movable jaw, the lutter can be readily detached to facilitate 1re-sharpening or setting of its claw end or to-replace it by another in ease of fractures, or replacement of the sliding straps or other portion. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination Withlthe jaw levers A and B, thel sliding strap C, with its sci-evi D, and wedge or gib F, for operation together essentially as herein set forth. y
' ROBERT BAIN.
