ATnNT RUDOLPH R. BUEHLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PHILADELPHIA HARDWARE AND MALLEABLE IRON WORKS, OF
PENNSYLVANIA.
REGISTER OR VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,892, dated November 14, 1899.
Application filed March 18, 1899. Serial No. 709,584. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, RUDOLPH R. BUEHLER, a Citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Registers or Ventilatore, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a register or ventilator 'embodying a wheel, a sliding plate, shutters engaging with said plate, a lever engaging said wheel and plate, and a face-plate 'on which said lever and Wheel are mounted, the combination of parts being such that said wheel may be of small diameter and a rotation of said wheel to a limited extent will move said plate to a great extent, and thus easily and quickly eect the opening or closing of the shutters, while the spaces between the latter are comparatively unobstructed and the convenience of a wheel for operating the shutters is preserved.
Figure l represents a plan view of a register or ventilator embodying my invention, the same being shown in closed position, a portion of the front or outer face-plate being broken away. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the register or ventilator in open position, a portion of the front or outer face-plate being brokenaway. Fig. 3 represents a section on line no, Fig. 2, showing the operatingwheel, the deflectors, and the actuating mechanism common thereto. Fig. 4 represents a section on line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a movable bar detached from the position seen in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 represents, on an enlarged scale, a perspective view of the lower portion of the interior of the frame 'seen in Figs. 1 and 2, showing the parts in the act of beingassembled.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the face-plate of a register or ventilator, the same having an annularseat or recess B at or near the central portion thereof and a wheel or plate C rotatably mounted therein, which wheel is adapted to be actuated by means of the knobs or iinger-pieces D and provided with the solid portions E, which alternate with the open portions F, the latter being of substantially the same shape and contour as the solid and open portions G and H of the recessed portion of the face-plate A.
J designates a wrist-pin which is attached eccentrically to the rear portion of the outer rotatable wheel C and is adapted to engage the walls of the slot K, which is at or near one extremity of the lever L, which is fulcrumed at M, the other extremity N of said lever engaging the bifurcated lug P of the sliding bar Q, which latter has the openings R therein, which are engaged by the pintles S of the shutters or deflectors T, which, as will be understood from Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 6, are eccentric or at one side of the longitudinal centers of said deflectors, the latter revolving on the centrally-located journals or pintles U and V, which are mounted in bearings W and E' in the frame X.
The construction of the bar Q and the manner of assembling the parts will be best understood from Figs. 5 and 6, the inner surface of said bar having the tongue Y thereon, which is engaged by the bowed spring Z, the terminals A' of which normally lie in proximity to the projections B', said spring being held between said tongue Y and the ridges or ribs C' on the bar Q.
D' designates a plate, between which and the frame X are formed the bearings E' for the journals said plate D' having the slotted lugs F', within the walls of which the ribs C' and the spring Z slide with the plate D', as will be evident from Fig. 4, it being apparent that the friction of the spring Z against the contiguous wall of the slot of the lug F' will hold the register in the desired open, closed, or intermediate positions. The plate D' is secured in position to the contiguous portion of the outer frame X by means of a screw or other fastening device.
The operation is as follows: When the register is closed, the parts normally appear as seen in Fig. l, the contact of one of the members of the springZ with the contiguous wall of the slotted lug F', as has been explained, holding the indicator-wheel in proper position. The stationary solid portions F of the face-plate, which may be colored or otherwise marked to indicate the closed position of the wheel C, now appear visible through the openings F, thus indicating the closed condition of the register. IVhen it is desired to open the register, the wheel C is turned into the position seen in Figs. 2 and 3, Wherefrom it will be apparent that the openings F and Hare in alinement, the shutters T, as also the indicating-wheel, being held in either extreme or intermediate positions by means of the spring Z, as is evident, the proper movement being imparted to the bar Q through the medium of the lever L, Which engages the lugs P thereof, as will be evident from Figs. 2 and 3.
It Will be apparent that the spring Z may be omitted, if desired, Without departing from the spirit of my invention and that other changes may be made which will come Within the scope of the same, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a register or ventilator, a Wheel on the face-plate thereof, a sliding plate mounted on the frame of the register, shutters having bearings on said frame and being adapted to be engaged with said plate, and a Wrist-pin on said Wheel, in combination with a lever which is mounted on said face-plate, and having an end engaging with said plate, and the other end provided with a slot receiving said wristpin.
2. In a register or ventilator, a face-plate, a Wheel mounted thereon, shutters having bearings on a frame of the register, a sliding plate receiving pintles eccentric on said shutters, and a lever which engages at one end with a pin eccentrically on said wheel and at the other end with said plate, said lever being mounted on said face-plate.
RUDOLPH R. BUEHLER.
