EXTENSION FLUSH. BOLT FOB DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1915.
Application filed July 29, 1911. Serial No. 641,356.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enoorr OHNSTRAND, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondagaand State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Extension Flush Bolt for Doors, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention has for its object the production of an extension flush lock belt for doors and the like, which is particularly simple in construction and highly eflicient and durable in use; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters desi nate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary edge view, partly in section, of a door provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of parts seen in Fig. 1, parts being omitted. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of mechanism seen in Fig. 2.
This extension flush bolt comprises, a supporting plate, a bolt operating plate carried by the supporting plate and slidable length wise thereof, and an operating lever pivoted to the supporting plate, and having an arm engaging the bolt operating plate, the operating lever and the bolt operating plate also preferably having coacting means for locking the bolt operating plate in either ofvits extreme positions; that is, in either of its positions assumed when the bolt is Withdrawn or when the bolt is in looking position. I
1 is the supporting plate Wl1iCll 'lS usually inserted into the edge face of the door 2 with its upper face flush with the edge surfaces of the door 2.
3 is a bolt operating plate slidable along the rear side of the plate 1 withina recess t in the edge of the door which is closed by the supporting plate, said plate 3 being provided with a coupling piece 5 at one end which is pivoted at 6 thereto, this coupling piece connecting a rod 7 which operates the bolt 8, to the sliding plate 3.
The plate 1 is secured in position by any suitable means as screws 9 and is formed with a lengthwise slot 10 which is closed by the sliding bolt operating plate 3, such plate 3 being movable in a guide formed by ears 11 projecting into the recess i from the plate 1 on opposite sides of the slot 10,
and rods 12 connecting opposing ears 11, the rods 12 bearing against the rear face of the plate 3.
13 is an operating lever pivoted at 14: between its ends to opposite side walls of the slot and movable from either of two starting positions to the other when looking or unlocking the bolt, one arm of the lever, as 15, being arranged to extend through an opening 16 in the sliding plate 3 and slidably engage with the opposite end walls of such opening for shifting the plate 3 to withdraw the bolt 8 from, or project the same into, operative position.
The other arm of the lever 13 is provided with a finger engaging end 17 normally lying in either one or the other of depressions 18 approaching the ends of the slot 10, one side face of the, lever is normally flush with theplane of the face of the plate 1 when the lever is in one of its starting or extreme positions, Fig. 2, and the other face thereof is flush with said plane when the lever has been shifted to its other extreme or starting position to slide the plate 3.
The locking means associated with the bolt operating plate 3 and the lever 13 for holding said plate in either one of its extreme positions comprises a projection on one of said parts 3 or 13 and grooves or sockets in the other of said parts for re ceiving, the projections when said parts are in one or the other of their extreme or starting positions.
As here shown the bolt operating plate 3 is formed with projections or ribs 19 on opposite sides of the opening 16 of said plate 3, and the lever 1.3 is provided with grooves 20 in its front and rear faces for receiving the projections 19 respectively, the grooves being near the pivot 14 of said lever and usually in a plane intersecting the axis of the pivot 14 and arranged at a right angle to the lengthwise axis of the lever 13.
As seen in Fig. 2, when thelever is in either of its starting positions, one of the projections 19 is in one of the grooves 20 so that any pressure applied to the plate 3 will be transmitted to the lever 13, but owing to the relative arrangement of the grooves 20 and the pivot 14:, the lever will not be moved and thus the plate 3 will be held from movement.
In order to prevent the lever 13 from remaining in any position between its extreme or starting positions a spring 21 is parts.
