SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,778, dated November 14, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, WILLIAM ENGLISH, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Outdoor Seats, (for which I have made application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 325, dated January 6, 1899,) of which the following is a specification.

These improvements relate to an invention for which I have obtained Letters Patent No. 611,617, dated October 4, 1893, and which consists of an endless cover or surface adapted to be revolved around a seat-board, so as to bring the upper part of the said endless seat cover or surface when wet below and the lower or dry part on the top of the seat-board, the Wet being removed by`a brush or scraper below the said seat-board.

My present invention has chiefly for its object to provide an improved kind of endless seat cover or surface which is less liable to take up and retain moisture,and consequently when revolved at short intervals will still provide a dry seat. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end view and Fig. 2 a front view, partly in section at line A A of Fig. 3, Fig. 3 a plan, and Fig. 4 a vertical section at line B B of Fig. 2, showing my improvements applied to a double tram-car or the like seat. Fig. 5 is an end view and plan, at an enlarged scale of a portion, of myimproved seat.

In carrying out my invention,and referring to the iigures generally, in lieu of employing, as hitherto, an endless seat cover or surface made of strips of wood or the like secured upon an endless band, I employ an endless seat cover or surface a of wire woven in coil fashion--say having each two strands, (see more particularly Fig. 5,) the ends of each two strands being soldered or, by preference, brazed together and covered by a beading b. The said coiled-wire seat-cover is woven in a straight piece and the ends thereof connected together by twisting a coil of wire into the two end coils, which forms an invisible joint, and thus renders the seat entirely smooth and continuous. The seat-cover described I may weave of galvanized aluminium, copper, or other suitable wire, and the ends of the coils or sides of the seat-cover I cover by a beading b. In order to facilitate the revolving of the'said endless seat cover or surface a., I employ at the back or at the front or preferably at both ends a roller c c, (see more particularly Fig. 4,) over which the seat cover or surface a is adapted to revolve. Between the said rollers I employ a board d, and across the same metal or other suitable runners e e, adapted to keep the seat cover or surface a at such a distance above the board d that the moisture accumulating on the latter is not liable to be absorbed by the person seated on the cover or surface c.. The board d itself I dish out, so as to form a channel d in the middle, which inclines toward each end of the seat and allows the rain passing through the cover or surface a to run constantly off the said board,

The form of endless seat cover or surface described, besides being less liable to retain moisture, is extremely simple in construction, and the coilsthereof being linked together they are capable of turning on each other, so as to accommodate themselves to the shape of the rollers at the ends of the board d, and thus cause the seat cover or surface a to turn most easily.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the seat-board of the chair, an endless band passing around the seatboard and rollers for supporting the band at a slight distance above the seat-board, to provide for drainage, substantially as described.

2. In combination, the seat-board having channels to provide for the drainage of water, an endless seat-cover arranged above the seatboard and rollers for supporting the seatcover, substantially as described.

3. In combination, the seat-board, an endless cover of woven wire in eoil fashion, means l said board is adapted to permit drainage of for supportingthe seat-cover above the board, the water, substantially as described. 1o and means whereby said board is adapted to In witness whereof I have hereunto set my permit drainage of the water which passes hand in presence of two witnesses. 5 through the cover, substantiallyas described.
