UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS SOHIRRA, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF THIRTY- EIGHT FORTY-FIFTIIS TO JOHN L. WERLING, MARTIN 'KUEHNLE, AND ALBERT J GOULD, O FSAME PLACE.
T H RE'AD-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 636,566, dated November 7, 1899. Application filed April 4, 1899. Serial No. 711,668. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS SOHIRRA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Thread-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 indicates a sectional View, on line a; as of Fig. 2, of a modified form of my improved thread-protector. Fig. 2 is a section of thesame on line y y ofFig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View, on line 2 z of Fig. 4, of vthe preferred form of my improved thread-protector. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of modified form of protector.
My invention relates to devices adapted to protect threads upon pipesand other articles provided therewith.
The object of my invention is to produce simple, cheap, and efiicient device for such purpose. g
In the practice of my invention Iuse a circle or ring formed of fibrous material, such as compressed wood-pulp or' paper, which is surrounded on the exterior with alight metallic band. 7
I will now describe my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which like reference characters indicate like parts wherever they occur.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 is a band of fibrous material, preferably corrugated transversely to produce thread- I engaging surfaces 2 2 of limited but sufficient area to tightly retain the protectors upon the pipe or other article to which it may be secured.
3 is a metallic band secured upon the outer surface of said fibrous ring in any suitable manner, but preferably by forming in the center of said metallic band a series of inwardly projecting points 4 4, which are adapted to engage in the fibrous ring, thereby firmly securing the same to said metallic band, as shown in the drawings.
In Fig. 5 I show a form of device in which the fibrous band 1 projects somewhat beyond the metallic band surrounding the same, forming the inwardly-projecting flange 1', adapted to protect the outer thread on the pipe or other article.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A thread-protector comprising a fibrous ring having transverse corrugations, and a metallic band secured to the exterior of said fibrous ring, substantially as set forth.
2. A thread-protector comprising a fibrous ring having transverse corrugations on its interior surface, and a metallic band having a number of inwardly-projecting points adapted to engage in said fibrous ring whereby the same is secured to said metallic band, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS SOHIRRA.
