DEXTER H. CHMBERLN, (,ll1 'VVTEST RXBURY, iLiASSGHUSETTS.
' Letters-Pctmzt No. 63,611, dated April 9, 1867.
IMPROVED METHOD 0F CASTING TYPE 0Nl PRINTING-WHEELS.
To ALL WHOM Ir MAY coNoiinNf,
Be it known that I, DEXTER H. CHAMBERLAIN, of West Roxbury, in the county ot' Norfolk, and State oi' Massachusetts, have invented` a new and useful improvement inthe Mode ofCasting Type on the Periphery of I Printing-'Wheels or Disks, of which the following is e full, clear, :ind exuct description, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings, making a. port of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan View of the mould with the cover removed; end
Figure 2, n section of the same on the line moi' iig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide n menns for casting letters, figures, ory other devices on the periphery of a circular disk or wheel, and is more especially designed to'be appliedto wheels used in cancelling 'or hond-stamps. and the invention consists of :t circular mould-block provided with ai. series of rodi-.1l recesses or grooves extending entirely nround the some, in which are litted e corresponding series of mouldsections, the outer ends of' which are on n. line with the exterior rim of the mouldfhlock, and their inner ends provided-with suitable letters or igures facing un inner spacein the mould-block; the whole being surrounded by a. divided ring held in position by means of springs on either side.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base-plate upon which is supported the moul'd-blocleB. The
'mould-block B consists of o. solid circalnr piece of metal, with a. circular recess in the contre, and having e series of radial recesses or grooves formed with square or parallel sides, and extending from theedge of the 'central circular recess to the exterior rim or edge of the mould-block. Within these recesses nre flttedn corresponding series of mould sections C, being ush at their outer ends with the perimeter ofthemould-block, cndhavingV sunk on their inner endsl any letters, figures, or other devil ce that maybe desired. round the mould-block and sections is fitted a divided ring, D, which may be readily closed upon the said'hlock endsections, so that the letter may be held in place, end ns readily removed to allow the sections to be slipped out from the recesses, when the costing is completed. The seid ring D is held in position around the block and sections by means of a. spring, E, plnccdbetween it and n pin or projection, P, on the base. The Whole is'surmounted by a. cover, F, provided with a suituble opening for the yadmission of the melted metal in the mould. The ring D that surmounts the mould sections is made in two ports in order to allow it to yield to the pressure occasioned by the expansion of the melted metal inthe mould, as o. solid or ent-ire ring would belinble to breek, and the springs,
which muy he of any suitable form or material, can be mode rigid enough to retain the ring in place during the processoi' casting. The mould-block may bo'of any thickness required, so as to allow mould sectionsoi` any` desired width verticcllyvtdbe` plnccd in the recesses of the snrne, and instead of, u wheel, n. cylinder may be formed in the mould,. ond in such a. cose the core mary be enlarged so ns to cest e cylinder with o. rim of any required thickness to receive the impressions of the type on.,
In operation the mould sections nreslid into the recesses of the block, when the ring is placed around the sume and held in position bythe springs E. ll'he cover isplaced over the'whole, und themetel poured into the mould. 'Whon sutliciently cool, the cover is taken oli, the springs ure removed, und the ring token away, which allows the mould sections to be rcndily slid ontv from tlierecesscs, lezivi'ng the finished wheel to be essily teken out. A i i Having thus described my invention, what I clnim 'as new, nnd'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1f. I-'ciaim the movable mould sections C, in combination with the mould block B, whereby impressions may be cust upon the perimeter of n circuler disk or wh'eel, or the surface of ecylinder, substantially as set forth.
f 2. The mould-block B, provided with recesses for the reception of the mould. sections, substantially as specified. i
I cluim conlnng the mould sections in place by means of edivided ring, in A,combination withn spring or springs, ns and ior the purpose specified. f v y In testimony whercot I have signed my name to this specific-Milenio the presence of twsu'bscribing witnesses.
