To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, -IARRWE. FRY, acitizen of the United States, and a. resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lm- .proveniente in vMolds for Rubber Articles, of which the following is afull, clear., and exact description.,
This invention relates more particularly lto moldsfor the manufacture of rubber heels for shoes. y
@1n the manufacture of heels or heels and soles combined, the mold comprises primarily three members as ordinarily constructed. The inner member has an openingtherethrough shaped to correspond to the shape of the article to be made and on one side of the intermediate member is a top plate While the opposite face of the intermediate niember is covered by molds are usually made so that a number of articles may be manufactured at the saine time and the articles are usually vulcanized While held in the molds. It is desirable that the articles manufactured be identified withl the name of the `manufacturer or with the name of thedealer. One of the mold plates or members usually has such name or other identifying characters cut or otherwise produced thereon so that when the heel or other article is cast, the naine or characters will a pear on the heel. As ordinarily constructed the die 'or member containing the name is of heavy metal and there must be a name or other character for each mold, there being, as before stated, a number of these molds arranged along side of each other. lf the articlesv manufactured are to contain the name of different manufacturers or -dealers in shoes in connection with which the heels are used, it Will be evident that the cost of the dies-Would be considerable because the plate or member' containing the name of the' manufacturer or dealer would either have to be changed With a new member or a spe* cial member prepared for the particular manufacturer' or dealer.
One of theprincipal objects of the invention is to overcome the objections referred to and to provide simple and efficient means whereby the molds may be constructed substantially the same as heretofore7 except tha-t the name of the manufacturer or dealer or other-identification character or characters isproduced ber or matrix interposed between two vof the a bottom plate. The
'v bottoniv member 13.
upon a thin .metal or other inem#- ous kinds ef rubber heels or like articles Witliany ldesired character or characters thereon, and with very little expense.
lilith these and otherobjects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more 'particib larly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
ln the drawings, Figure 'l is a fragmen tary view c-f-oneseotion of the mold. y Fig.` 2 isa plan view with the top member 4removed. i
ligris f an enlarged transverse section, 'taken on the line lll-lll of Fig. 2; and
lig. 4: is afr'agmentary plan View of the name or character plate or member.
` The mold 10 comprises a main or interinel vdiete member ll, a top member 12 and a These members are usually of 'steel and of considerable thickness and each member 11, 12 and 1.3 is .of

to lit into openings in the members ll and 12 l respect to each other. The member 11 has an opening corresponding to the shapev of the article to be made, in this case a rubber heel, and extending upward from 'the'memu ber l are posts or pins 16. The posts or pins 16 have a tapering top portion and a reduced part 1'? adapted to form openings4 or recesses in the heel.' 'The member'lf may have its surface or vface provided With proliecting parts 18 and 19 to properly shape one face of thevheel. The parts as thus described may be of the usual or of any preferred construction. A
Ordinarily the name of the manufacturer Y so that the said members will register with or dealer or other identifying'characters are f formed onor-in the inner face'of the mem-l the characters is made, thesaid memberl 13 usually thrown away-and' another one* ,fied therefor. Toavoid this, I provide a .ldor matrix member 20.` This member. Q()inay be' of any suitable material, as alumi- `"murine: other sheet metal or may be made of/ papierlumache,'-or` from thev material such as used in stereotyping. The 7member 2O has characters 2Qa which are tobe reproduced on the heels as manufactured and Awhich may be made oai-any suitablenature.v The metal lo member thin and. may be such -as will f permit"theeharacters 20A to. be produced vthereonby means of typero'r '.iviee, and. said memb to lit over the pos 16 and with other open- 22 to lit the dowel pins in order that f .the said member may register properly with "Jreepect to the Aother-. members ofthe mold..
'llhe. vmember :tachable and .isinte'rposed between the member-i3 and the Vmember 11 and forms one v-ieee or' theA moldes shown. The rubber inv seit state is [placed in the mold as indie Ued at 23 bei e position, and pleted the character or member lwill appear upon the rubber he'el orfother article made. Incase a change of ,or other characters, trade-marks, ete. desired', it is. only necessary to provide 'new plate or member 20 which may be rylreadily done an g-penee, without disturbing the.- ebere of the mold.

ore the member '12 is placed` d at, a very little. ex
fmmth fore mg that l s is provided where y rubberv members thereof; and that themold as thus made is simple in construction and is just as readily assembled and is'lesa expensive than the molds as ordinarily constructed when made to accomplish thesame results. Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters `Patent:--' I L 1.111 a mold of the character described, thefcombinationwitb an intermediate member having an opening therethrough rresponding to the shape of the article to be made, of a bottom member, and a character plate arranged between said intermediate and bottom members, the marginal portion clamped between said.
of said plate being members and the middleI portion of said bei,
plate forming one i'ace of the mold.
2. In a mold of the character deseri the combination with an intermediate member having an opening therethrough' correspond-ing to the shape of-,the article to be 60 made, of a' bottom member having' posts projecting v therelrom- 1for engagement 'with .the intermediate member, and a character plate arranged between said ,intermediate ,ottom members, the marginal portion of said plate having openings fitting around' lthelposts on the bottom member and the middle 'portion of the plate forming one face of the mold. ,V
