No. 635,628. Patented Oct. 24, I899.
W, I.'WOLVEBTON. VEHICLE COUPLING.
(Application filed Mar. 11, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNrTnn STATns WASHINGTON IRVING IVOLVERTON, OF HOLTON, KANSAS.
VEHICLE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,628, dated O tob 24, 1899.
Application filed March 11,1899. Serial No. 708,688. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON IRVING VVOLVERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holton, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to couplings for vehicles; and its object is to provide an improved coupling for connecting the doubletree and tongue of a vehicle.
The main characteristic features of the invention are that it employs bolts instead of screws for securing the coupling-irons, that it serves as an antirattler, and avoids the use of the usual straps for preventing the doubletree from swinging too far upon its pivotal support.
The construction of the coupling will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the appended claims, in connection with the accompanying' drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a portion of a tongue and doubletree connected by my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the doubletree and tongue coupling.
The reference-numeral l designates a portion of the vehicle-tongue, to the upper side of which is secured a strap or plate 2, the rear end of which is formedwith a recess or socket 3 to receive the front end 4 of the iron, which extends from the circle on the tongue, (not shown,) said iron 4 being secured by a bolt 5 passing through the iron 4, the plate 2, and the rear end of the hammer-strap 6. The forward end of the hammer-strap extends over the doubletree, as is usual, and is provided with an eye 7, surrounded by an annular recess or cap 8, which receives an elastic washer 9, fitting around the upper end of a hollow tapering post 10, rising from the plate or iron 2 and resting upon the upper end of a hollow tapering casing 11, provided with a vertical flange 12, which latter rests against the front edge of the doubletree. The casing 11 is formed integral with a horizontal plate 13, securely bolted to the under side of the doubletree and provided on either side of the 18 designates a bolt passing down through the eye of the hammer-strap and through the hollow post 10 and secured by a nut 19 at its lower end.
The tapering form of the hollow post and easing allows the securing-bolt to be tightened up without causing the working parts to bind.
I claim 1. In a vehicle-coupling, the combination with a tongue and a plate secured thereto provided with a hollow tapering post, and laterally-projecting stops, of a doubletree, a coup ling-iron secured thereto and provided with depending lugs and a hollow casing fitting over said post, a hammer-strap fitting over the post, and a bolt for securing the parts t0-- gether pivotally.
2. In a vehicle-coupling, the combination with a tongue and a plate secured thereto provided with a hollow tapering post, and laterally-projecting stops, of a doubletree, a coupling-iron secured thereto .and comprising a horizontal plate having depending lugs, and a-fian ged casing fitting over the tapering post, a hammer-strap provided with a cap fitting over the post, a yielding packing Within the cap, and a bolt for securing the parts together.
3. In a vehicle-coupling, the combination with a tongue and a plate secured thereto provided with a hollow tapering post, and laterally-projecting stops, and at its rear end with a recess or socket, of a doubletree, a couplingiron secured thereto, and comprising a horizontal plate having depending lugs, and a casing fitting over the post, and provided with a flange bearing against the front side of the doubletree, a hammer-strap provided with a cap at its front end, a packing for said cap, a bolt securing the rear end of the hammerstrap, and a pivot-bolt for securing the front end thereof.
4. In a vehicle-coupling, the combination a yielding packing Within said cap, and a with a tongue of a strap secured thereto pro pivot-bolt for securing the parts together. IO vided with a hollow tapering post provided In testimony whereof I affix my signature at its base with a collar, a doubletree, a coupin presence of two Witnesses.
ling-iron secured thereto and comprising a WASHINGTON IRVING WOLVERTON. horizontal plate and a vertical casing, the lat- Witnesses: ter having a depending flange; a hammer- J. M. DOTY,
strap provided with a cap fitting over the post, 0. N. HURsT;
