KVILTJAM FRANCIS MGKEE, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,854, dated October 10, 1899.
Application filed October 13,1898. Serial No. 693,871. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM FRANCIS MOKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springdlinges for Doors, Gates, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spring-hinges for doors, gates, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved hinge of this class whereby the door or gate is kept closed at all times and whereby when opened the door or gate will be automatically closed or swung into the closed position.
The invention consists in the combination, with a hinge of my peculiar construction arranged so as to automatically close when the door or gate is opened in either direction by means of two springs, of circular flanged in dependent detachable inclosing caps for each spring, so that they may easily be removed for cleaning the spring from accumulated dust, &c., without need of unshipping the entire hinge, as is now required.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of a portion of adoor or gate provided with my improved hinge; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the hinge, and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improve ment are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings 1 have shown at 5 a gate-post or similar device, or said part may represent a part of the frame of a door, and I have also shown at 6 a part of a gate or door, and in the practice of myinvention I provide ahinge which comprises two similar plates 7, which are secured to the gate and to the post 5. One of said plates 7 is provided with two circular plates 9, which project therefrom at right angles thereto, and the other plate 7 is provided with a circular plate 12, which projects at right angles therefrom and which is adapted to enter the space between the circular plates 9, as clearly shown in the drawings. A bolt or shaft 13 is passed centrally through said circular plates and secured to the central plate 12, and said bolt is screwthreaded at one end and provided with a nut 14, and mounted on each end of said bolt is a circular casing 15, each of which is provided with an annular flange or rim 16, and said flanges or rims are directed inwardly and form annular chambers, in each of which is mounted a spring 1'7. One end of each of said springs is secured to the central bolt or shaft 13, and the opposite end of one of said springs is secured to the adjacent circular plate 9 at 18 adjacent to the plate 7, with which said plate 9- is connected, and the outer end of the other spring is secured to the other plate 9, adjacent to the outer edge thereof, as shown at 19. As thus constructed it will be seen that one of said springs is wound up when the door or gate is swung in one direction and the other unwound and that this operation is reversed when the gate or door is swung in the opposite direction, and the operation of said'springs, as will be readily understood, is to hold the gate or door at all times in a closed position and to close the same when swung in either direction.
My improved spring-hinge is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and is also comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hinge consisting of two similar base-plates secured one to a gate or door and one to the post, one of said plates being provided with two circular plates projecting at right angles therefrom and the other with a single circular plate which fits between the said circular plates, a pintle which passes centrally through the plates, springs mounted on the opposite ends of the pintle, the inner ends of each spring being secured to the said pintle, and
the outer ends to the first-named circular enee of the subscribingwitnesses, this 12th plates and an independent detachable cireuclay of September, 1898.
lar fian ed inclosin cap for each sprin held 1 in position by the inintle, all as and 31 the WILLIAM FRANCIS MCKEPJ' 5 purpose set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as F. A. STEWART,
my invention I have signed my name, in pres- V. M. VOSLER.
