SPRING-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1910.
Application filed February 3, 1909. Serial No. 475,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, ALLEN S. NERO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bottineau, in the county of Bot-tineau and State of North Dakota, have invented ceruseful Improvements in Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
his invention relates to improvements in spring hinges for use on doors and the like and particularly adapted for use 011 screen doors and storm doors.
The object of the invention is to provide a spring hinge of this character which will be simple, strong and durable and comparatively inexpensive in construction and which is reversible so that it can be used on either side of a door frame or the like.
7 WVith the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a door and its frame or support showing the improved reversible spring hinge; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the door and its frame showing the hinge in top plan; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. t is a horizontal sectional View taken on the plane indicated by the line H in Fig. 1.
The improved spring hinge comprises two attaching members 1,2, one of which is adapted to be secured to a door or the like D and the other to a door frame F or other supporting structure. The member 1 comprises an apertured attaching plate adapted to be screwed -or otherwise secured to the door and an arm 3, the outer end of which has an opening 4 of square or other poly onal shape to receive either one of two similar-shaped ends 5 of a pivot 6 which is carried by the other member 2. The latter comprises an apertured attaching plate to be screwed or otherwise secured to the frame or support F, and a casing 7 which is secured to said plate by a bracket 8, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. The bracket 8 is formed from a strip of metal bent adjacent its center to provide a straight arm 8*, and an angular arm 8 The arm 8 is secured centrally on the apertured attach- 10 held in place by bolts or ing plate 2 and has a projecting extremity 8 secured in a tangential "position by a rivet 8 to the casing cylinder 7, as shown in Fig. 4;. The arm 8 is disposed at-an acute angle with respect to the other arm and radially with respect to the casing cylinder 7 said arm 8 having a right angularly bent extremity 8 secured by a rivet S to said casing cylinder 7. The casing 7 comprises a cylindrical body with open upper and lower ends closed by circular plates or heads 9,
the like 11 arranged upon the exterior of t-he body and passed through apertured ears or lugs formed on the edges of the plates 9, 10.
The pivot 6 is of cylindrical form and is rotatable in the casing by forming, adjacent to its upper and lower ends, reduced cylindrical bearing portions 11 which project through and rotate in bearing openings formed in the upper and lower plates 9, 10. The cylindrical body portion of the pivot corresponds in length to the height of the interior of the casing so that the upper and lower plates 9, 10 engage the annular shoulders 12 formed by the reduced portions 11 of the pivot. Projecting from the intermediate portion of the pivot and formed integral therewith is a radial arm 13 having a notched or recessed outer end 14 to receive a bracket 15 secured in the casing and adapted to support a circular guide rod or ring 16. A coil spring 17 surrounds the ring 16 and has one of its ends engaged with one side of the bracket 15 and its other end engaged with a washer 18, which latter slides upon the ring 16 and is adapted to be pressed by the spring against the other side of the bracket 15. When the pivot 6 rotates with the opening movement of the door, the arm 13 engages the washer 18 and moves the latter around on the ring 16, thereby compressing the spring 17 so that when the door is released said spring will return it to its normal or closed position. By making the pivot 6 with the squared portion 5 at both of its ends, it will be seen that the memher 2 may be used upon either side of the door frame by simply inverting said member, thereby dispensing with the necessity of having right and left members for opposite sides of the door.
In practice, I prefer to provide two of the members 1 for each of the members 2 so that one of the members 1 can be attached to a screen door and the other to a storm door,
thereby permitting the screen and storm doors to be quickly interchanged by simply lifting one oil of the members 2 and replacing the other.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The hereindescribed' spring hinge com prising a casing having'a circular body and top and bottom plates formed with concentric circular openings, a vertical pivot formed with an enlarged intermediate portion and reduced cylindrical bearing portions arranged adjacent its ends and forming annular shoulders, the extremities of said pivot being squared, said reduced bearing portions of the pivot being rotatable in the openings in said top and bottom plates, the latter bearing against the shoulders on said pivot, the enlarged intermediate portion of the pivot being formed with an integral radially extending arm having in the vertical edge of its outer end a transversely extending semi-circular notch, a bracket projecting inwardly from the vertical wall of the circular body portion of the casing, a ring secured in the last mentioned bracket concentric with the pivot and arranged in the notch in the radial arm of the pivot, a coil spring upon said ring and having one end bearing against the bracket upon the casing, a washer upon said ring and engaged with the other end of the spring and bearing against the radial arm on the pivot, an attaching bracket upon said body, and a second attaching bracket having an arm with a square opening to receive either one of the squared projecting ends of the pivot. 52. A device of the character described, in combination, a cylindrical casing, a spring actuated pivot therein, an attaching bracket engaged with said pivot, an apertured attaching plate, and a second bracket of angular shape formed from a metal strip bent upon itself to provide a straight arm and an angularly disposed arm, said straight arm being secured centrally to the attaching plate and having a projecting end secured tangentially to said cylindrical casing, said angular arm being disposed at an acute angle with respect to said straight arm, and radially With respect to the casing, and having its bent extremity secured to said casing, substantially asshown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
