SPRING- HINGE.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,380, dated December 23, 1890. Application filed February 21, 1890. Serial No. 341,270. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN A. J. RIECK- ERT, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hinge which is simple and durable in construction and specially adapted to support heavy doors, dmc., and arranged in such a manner as to facilitate the hanging of the door and at the same time making the door self-closing.
The invention consists of certain parts and. details, and combinations of the saine, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speci ication, in which similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding` parts in all the views.

Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a modified form of cam-ring and pivot in closed position, and Fig. 10 is a like view of the saine as open.
rlhe door or other similar article A is hung to the door casing or frame B by a lower and an upper hinge C and D, respectively, of which the lower hinge C is partly attached to the door A and partly to the door-sill E, and the upper hinge D is partly secured to the door and partly to the cross-bar F of the casing B. The two hinges C and D are substantially the same in construction, the only difference being in the manner ot' attaching the saine to the sill E and the cross-bar F.
The lower hinge C is provided with a transversely-extending base or bed plateG, formed in its top with a longitudinally-extending groove G', into which is fitted the square part H of the pivot H, adapted to pass into a casing I, secured to the door A. The pivot H stands vertically in the lower corner of the door, and is securely held in place on the baseplate G by being provided at its bottom with a square flange H2, iitting into a correspond- 5 5 ingly-shaped groove G2, formed in the plate G at its sides, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings.
The art of the pivot II above the bed-plate G and extending into the casing I is round, ot the top being formed into a cam H3, on which its a correspondingly-shaped cam J, formed on the under side of the ring J, also itted into the casing I, and provided on one side with a lug J2,tting into a vertically-extending groove I', formed in the inside of the circular casing I. A spring K presses on top of this cam-ring J, and on top of the spring rests a cap L, screwing in the upper end of the casing I and serving to hold the spring in 7o place, and at the same time to regulate the tension of the latter by screwing the said cap farther into or out of the casing I. For this purpose the periphery of the cap Lis provided with apertures which can be regulated from the outside through an opening I3 in the casing I. The latter is attached to the door A by being provided with front and rear flanges I2, adapted to be bolted to the faces of the door. 8c
The adjoining cam ends of the ring J and the pivot H may be made double, as shown in Figs. 9 and l0, so that when the door is swung into an open right-angular position the highest pointof the cam on the pivot is engaged by the highest point of the cam on the ring, as shown in Fig. 10. A slight notch is formed at the highest cam-point of the ring and is adapted to be engaged by the highest point of the pivot, so as to lock the door in 9o an open position. A slight pressure on the open door disengages the notch from the lug and the door swings shut by the force of the springs.
A plate N is screwed to the under side of the door, and is also screwed to the under side of the casing I, the round part of the pivot H passing through a suitable aperture in the said plate N. The rear squared end ot the pivot H abuts plate O, secured by screws to lthe base G, as is plainly shown in Fig. 5. 'lhe front of the squared part of the pivot II is engaged by a transverselyextending plate I), fitted into the groove G of the base G and secured to the said -base by screws after the door is hung, as hereinafter more fully described.
