SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,808, dated October 10, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LUOIUS ALSTON DOBLE, of Huron, in the county of Beadle and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Draining Attachment for Vessels, of

' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding the cover on a kettle or similar vessel in such manner as to permit the liquid in which food has been cooked to be drained ofi; and the object is to provide a simple device for this. purpose that may be readily attached to a vessel and also adjusted to various sizes of vessels.

I will describe a draining attachment for vessels embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a side elevation of a deviceembodying my invention and showing the same as applied to a vessel. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

The draining attachment comprises clamping rods or sections 1 2, which at the forward end have downward extensions or lugs. 3 4 formed in them to engage against the inner side of a vessel, and forward of these lugs the said sections are turned downward, as at 5 6, to engage against the outer edge of the vessel. From the center of the front portion an adjusting and locking rod or member 7 extends rearward, and at its rearward end it is bent to form a series of eyes 8, and the extreme rearward end isbent to form a finger-piece 9. The sections 1 and 2 are inclined rearward and upward, and atthe up-' per portion they are extended transversely, and this transverse portion is bent to form a series of alternating and oppositely-extended loops 10, each extended outward and upward. The clamping rods or sections, the loops, and the adjusting and locking rod are all made of a single length of Wire. From another length of wire a handle 11, a keeper 12, and brace-rods 13 are formed. These brace-rod portions extend upward in a divergent manner and are connected 'to the upper portion of the sections 1- and 2 in any desired manner. Alter natingoppositely-extended loops 14 are formed at the upper portion of. the braces, and these loops are interlocked with the loops 10, so that the parts are held. rigidly together, and these loops form the walls of a receiver for the bail 15 of the vessel and also a grip by which to lift or tilt the kettle. The handle is formed by the two portions of the wire extended parallel to form the lower portion of the handle, and at the upper portion of the handle the wire is twisted together, as shown, and then is twisted around the two portions at the junction of the handle and the braces, and then theend is carried upward to form the keeper 12.

In placing the device upon a kettle .to b drained first throw the bail to that side of the kettle that you wish to drain from, slip the cover back enough to admit the lugs or portions 3 4., and at this time, of course, the ad'- justing and locking section 7 must be free fronrthe keeper 12. Place the attachment over the cover at right angles to the kettleears and slip the lugs between the inside of the kettle and the cover, resting the handle of the drainer upon the opposite endof the cover. Raise the bail of the kettle, and press down upon the clamping-sections until the bail slips in place in its receiver, then push the handle forward or toward the center of the cover until all becomes taut, and then slip the keeper 12 through one of the eyes 8. The de- Vice now has a practically rigid connection with the kettle, and the kettle may betilted by taking hold of the handle 11 or by taking hold of the gripwhich receives the hail of the kettle. The device, being of resilient wire, may be adjusted to various sizes of vessels, the several eyes of course permitting it to be held as adjusted.

Having thus fully described my invention,

1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A draining attachment for vessels, comprising clamping members for engaging over the upper edge of a vessel, brace members connected to the clamping members and terminating in a handle, the said clamping members and brace members having interlocking loops adapted to be engaged by the hail of the vessel, the loops of each member being extended alternately in opposite directions and a locking member extended from the clamping members, substantially as specified.

2 A draining attachment for vessels, comprising clamping members for engaging over the upper edge of a vessel, brace members connected to the clamping members and terminating in a handle, the said brace members having their transverse upper portions bent to form loops, the brace members having the upper portions formed into loops interlocking with the first-named loops, an adjusting memher extended from the clamping members and having a series of eyes, and a keeper on the handle portion for engaging in either one of said eyes, substantially as specified.

3. A draining attachment for vessels, comprising clamping members having portions of the forward end to engage against the inner and outer side of a vessel, a locking member extended from the clamping members, the

said locking member and clamping members being formed of a single length of wire and having loops formed at the upper portions of the clamping members, a handle, braces extended from the forward end of said handle and connecting with the clamping members, the said braces being connected by a transverse portion formed into loops interlocking with the first-named loops, and a keeper on the handle, the said handle, keeper, braces and loops being formed of a single length of Wire, substantially as specified.
