A. B. MATTOON.
r SCOOP FOR GRAINS, SUGAR, &c.
No. 256,150. Patented Apr.11,1882.
QdWENESSES I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED B. MATTOON, OF OWASCO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DORR HEALD, OF SAME PLACE.
scoop FOR GRAIN, SUGAR, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,150, dated April 11, 1882,
Application filed March 2, 1882. (No model.)
1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. B. MATTOON, ot' Owasco, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoops for Grain, Sugar, Codes, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to produce asimple, durable, inexpensive, and efticient scoop for filling bags, &c., with grain, sugar, coffee, and the like, it being especially adapted for use in handling large quantities of these articles, and much more convenient and effective for this purpose than the ordinary small curved scoops now generally in use.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2,a transverse sectional view; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A desi gnates the body of my improved scoop, which 'is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal, with a bottom, B, sides G O, and inclined rear end or back, D. The front edge of sides 0 O are beveled, as shown, and may be turned outwardly to more readily enter the grain, 850. The upper edges of the sides and back are turned or bent over and around arimwire, E, consisting of but one piece, and so continued outwardly and inwardly to form a loop or handle, F, at the rear of the scoop The edges and sides of the scoop are thus strengthened by the wire E, and prevented from bendingoutwardly or flaring by reason of the weight of the grain.
G designates a bail, having its ends H H hooked through openings I I in the sides 0 0 under the rim-wire E, near their front or beveled ends. The'weight is thus, in a measure,
the other.
up the grain, coffee, &c., and empty or drop it into a bag or other receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to. secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The scoop formed of a single piece of sheet metal, with bottom B, rear end or back, D, and sides 0 (J, the front edges of the latter being beveled and turned outwardly, as and for the purposes set forth.
I 2. The scoop having itsupper edges turned or bent over and provided with the strengthening rim-wire fitting under theseturned edges, consisting of but one piece, and so continued outwardly and inwardly as to form one or more loops or handles at the end of the scoop, as set forth.
3. The scoop having its upper edges turned or bent over, the strengthening rim-wire fitting under these turned edges, and provided with the bail, the ends of which are adjusted through openings in the sides of the scoop under the Iin1-wire, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The scoop having its upper edges turned or bent over, the strengthening rim-wire fitting nnder these turned edges, and so continued outwardly and inwardly as to form a loop or handle at the rear of the scoop, and provided with the bail having its ends hooked or adjusted in openings in the sides of the scoop, near the front end thereof and under the rim-wire, as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of the scoop A B U G D, formed of a single piece of sheet metal, and having the front edges of its sides 0 O beveled and turned outwardly, and its upper edges turned or bent over, the single rim-wire forming loop or handle F, and the bail G, the ends of which are hooked in openings in the sides 0 0 under the rim-wire, asset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED B. MATTOON.
