PIANOFORTE FLANGE.

\/\/ITNE55E5 UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICEt CARL AUGUST OSTERBERG, OF BOSTON, MASSAOIIUSE' S.
PlANoFORTE FLANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,4:74, dated October 10, 1899.
Application filed December 12, 1898. Serial No. 698,964. (No model.)
To (ti/Z whmn (It ntugl concern:
Be it known that I, CARL AUGUST Osrnn- BERG, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pianoforte- Flanges, of which the following, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the peculiar construction and arrangement of a flange for pianofortes, the exact nature of which may be best understood by reference to the specification and drawings, the object being to so construct a flange for pianoforte-actions that each one is adjustable and will admit of removing the part that is pivotally attached to it by simply turning a clamping screw. These objects I attain by means of the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a rail having one of my flanges attached, also showing in connection a hammer-butt. Fig. 2 is a cross vertical section showing the rail and flange. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing one member of the flange. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the second or spring member of the flange.
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention as it appears when used in connection with the hammer-butt, although it will apply equally well to the jack or to any pivotal joint in connection with a pianoforteaction.
In the drawings, R represents the rail, to which the flanges for supporting the hammerbntts H are attached. These flanges F K are secured to the rail R by screws T. Each flange has two parts or members F and K, especially shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The member F has a large hole II for the reception of an annular rib D, made on the member K. This rib D is shown in Fig. 2 as entering the l hole II. The object of this construction is that the two members F and K shall be acouratel y held in place one upon the other. The screw T passes through both of the members, as shown in Fig. 2. The neck F of the member F of the flange has a groove G, preferably V-shaped, for the reception of the pivot-pin 'P. The neck K of the spring member is bent or folded back upon itself, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4C, for the purpose of obtaining a firmer bearing for the head of the clamping-screw S. The pin P, which acts as a pivot for the hammer to swing upon, is held firmly in place by the clamping action of the spring member K.
\Vhen it is desired to detach the hammer, the user has only to slacken the clampingscrew S. This action will allow the spring member K to yield sufficiently to admit the pin P to slip upward between the upper parts of the members F and K, and thus allowing the hammer-butt to be removed. The hammer-butt may be replaced and securely held by tightening up the screw S, it not being necessary to drawthe pin from the hammenbutt.
I claim In a pianoforte-action an adjustable flange consisting of two detachable members, one having a groove adapted to receive the pivotpin of the hammer-butt, and a large orifice to engage with an annular rib projection from the second member; a second member adapted to coact with the first member adapted to hold the said pivot-pin of the hammerbutt and having an annular rib adapted to engage with the said orifice of the first memher, and a clamping-screw adapted to hold the said members together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 22d day of October, A. D. 1898.
CARL AUGUST OSTERBERG. lVitnesses:
AUG. F. Os'rnnnnnc, \VILLIAM Fnson.
