My invention relates to eVaporating-furnaces, and has for its object to provide a simple, compact, and efficient construction and arrangement of parts adapted particularly for use in evaporating the juice of sugar-cane or sorghum -cane, but also adapted for other analogous uses, and particularly to provide a simple and efficient arrangement of dampers for controlling the passage of the products of combustion from the fire-box to the Iiue.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a furnace constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the furnace on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

1 designates the casing of an evaporatingfurnace constructed in accordance with my invention, the fire-box 2 being formed in one end of the casing and having a grate 3, below which is located the usual ash-pit 4. The wall of the furnace is provided with suitable fuel and draft doors 5 and 6, communicating, respectively, with the spaces above and below the grate.
At the opposite end of the furnace from the fire-box is the smoke-flue 7, and the space within the furnace between the fire-box and the iiue is divided by a horizontal partition 8 to form upper and lower passages or chambers 9 and 10, of which the latter communicates at its rear end directly with the flue by an opening 11. The front ends of these passages or chambers are separatedfrom the rebox by partitions provided with draft-openings fltted, respectively, with upper and lower dampers 12 and 13, the former of which is preferably of a length equal to the width of the furnace, whereby when open the products ofv combustion entirely lill the upper passage or chamber in their path to the flue. Communication between said upper passage or chamber and the fiueis established through an opening 1i, formed in the horizontal partition between the upper and lower passages and fitted with a cut-ff damper 15,and hence when the front draft-damper 12 is open to allow the heat and products of combustion to circulate through the upper passage or chamber the cutoff damper 15 should be opened to allow said products to pass downward into the lower passage or chamber of the furnace and thence into the flue. On the other hand, kwhen the draft-damper12 and cut-off damper 15 are closed the lower draftdamper 13 should be opened to allow the passage of the products of combustion through the lower chamber to the iiue. In the construction illustrated the spindles of the several dampers are extended through the side wall of the furnace and are fitted with operating handles or levers, (respectively designated 12, 13a, and 15a.)
An important feature of the invention resides in the fact that the cut-off damper 15, cooperating with the opening 14, is of a narrower width than the space between the partition S and the bottoms of the evaporatingpans 16, whereby the said cut-off damper when in its vertical or open position will leave an intervening space between the unhinged edge thereof and the contiguous-evaporating pan and will thus constitute a baftleor throttle which compels the heated products of combustion to strike against and heat up the extreme rear portion of the pan next to the chimney or stack before said products enter and escape through the opening 14. in said partition.
Supported by the furnacewalls and forming the covers, respectively, of thev fire-box and upper passage or chamber are the evaporating-pans 16, of copper or analogous 'material, to receive the liquid which is to be evaporated. e
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when it is desired to cool the rear evaporating-pan it may be accomplished by causing the products of combustion to pass IOO through the lower passage oi' chamber, whereas when the full heat is required upon both evaporating pans the lower draft -damper should be closed and the upper one opened. The construction of thc upper passage or chamber of an area which is equal to that of the pan by which its top is closed provides for the uniform application of heat to the entire surface of the pan, and hence insures the uniform evaporation of the liquid. The regulating or cut-off damper l5 also serves to impede to a greater or less extent the passage of the products of combustion through the upper chamber to the smoke-Hue by disposing it to throttle the said passage, Fig. 2 showing said damper arranged in a position approximately transverse to the passage, whereby the products of combustion must pass around the edges thereof to reach the opening let in the partition-wall by which the upper and lower passages or chambers are separated.
It will be understood that in practice various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In an evaporating-furnace, the combination with a casing provided at one end with a lirebox and at the other end with an escape-flue, of a horizontal partition arranged within the casing between the tire-box and the escape,- flue and forming upper and lower passages, said horizontal partition being provided at the end contiguous to the escape-flue with a single opening, evaporating-pans forming the tops of the fire-box and said upper passa-ge, upper and lower draft-dampers arranged at the forward ends of the upper and lower passages, and a single cut-off damper arranged in operative relation to the single opening in said horizontal partition, said cutoli damper being disposed at the upper side of the parttion and of a narrower width than the space between the latter and the bottoms of the pans, whereby said cut-off damper, when in its vertical or open position, will leave an intervening space between the same and the contiguous panbottom, so as to constitute a baiile or throttle over which the products of combustion must pass before entering the opening in the partition, substantially as set forth.
