IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. THOMPSON, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved lamp. Figure 2 is a horizontal plan, on the line a: x of fig. 1, the wire frame being shown in section and the globe removed.

Figure 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the base of the lantern, including a part of the globe D, the removable portion being shown in red in the act of being connected with the base.

Like letters indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures.

The nature of my invention consists in connecting the top or frame portion of the lantern with the bottom part by a bayonet-fastening device, operating bythe partial rotation of one part in respect to the other; and, in combination therewith, of concentric flanges or lips upon the annular connecting rings, so constructed that the inner one acts as a guide to centre the other, so that the parts of both which form the fastening are readily brought to coincide As shown in the drawing, A is the base or bottom portion of the lantern containing the lamp B, which is of usual construction. D is the globe, and-E the upper or guard portion of the lantern, consisting of the annular rim'f, wire guards g'for protecting the globe, and top it, having'thc usual ring or handle it.

The object of my improvement is to facilitate access to the lamp, and to accomplish this I provide the rimf, to which the guards are attached, with two or more concentric slots, 2', having at their opposite ends a hole or enlargement, j. Goinciding in position with these holes I provide pins Zon the corresponding rim m, attached to part A, having heads of a size that will pass through the holes j. The form of the rims of A and B secures the presentation of these parts together in a position that carries the pins Z through the holes j, which readily admit their heads, when a slight turn of one part upon the other causes the pins to engage with the slots 2', so that the parts of the lantern become securely locked together for carrying, and can only be separated by areverse rotary movement of one part upon the other. To insure the ready engagement of the parts, the rim m has a flange, n, on its outer periphery, which is turned or bevelled downwards, and the rimf of the upper portion has a corresponding flange, o, fitting over and enclosing 12. When the part E is placed on A, these bevelled flanges serve as guides to bring the parts concentric, so that the pins Z coincide with the holes 7' and enter them without difiiculty, when the slightest turn of the part E secures a connection that is at all times safe, being incapable of accidental separation. The globe D enters the top of A and rests on its shoulder, while its upper extremity is similarly held by the cap 71.. When the portion E is removed the globe can be readily taken off to reach the lamp. This device afi'ords the advantage of the utmost cheapness of manufacture, readiness of connection and disconnection, and perfect security, and itsarrangement with the other parts of the lantern enables the globe to be removed for cleaning and other purposes with less trouble and inconvenience than usual.

What I claim as my invention is- The combination and arrangement of the two slots Hand apertures jj, concentric with the annular plates fm and pins H, with the parts A and E of the lantern case, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

I also claim, in combination therewith, the concentric flanges n o of the rimsfm, the one fitting within and serving as a guide for centring the other, arranged and operating substantially as described.
