Be it known that we, WILLIAM O. CAMP- BELL and VILLIAM II. MICKEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Peebles, in t-he county of Adams and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddles, of which the followingis a specitication.

Our invention relates to harness-saddles; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efciency in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination 0f parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a harness-saddle constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of the metal plate 8.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the saddle proper, which consists of a leather strap adapted to pass around the back of a horse and the ends provided with straps la, which are connected with a lower strap 2, provided with buckles 3, by which it is connected with the said strap lf. Secured to the said strap or saddle l at the edges thereof are two longitudinal strips 4;, and centrally secured to said strap l is a central strap 5, spaces being thus formed between the said edge strips and central strap, which form ways for the movable holdfast, which is connected with thebelly-band hereinafter described. This holdfast comprises two straps 6, which rest upon the strap l between the central strap 5 and the strips et and are movable thereon. Secured to said strap l is the checkrein-hook 7, and also secured to said central strap 5 at opposite sides of the said hook are metal plates 8, formed with arms 9, the ends of which are bent downwardly, forming ribs or iianges l0, which engage with the outer edges of the straps 6. The ends of the straps 6 are turned back upon themselves, for-min g loops which are connected with segmental slots 9 in plates ll, which are larger than the loops, so that the said plates may have a limited sidewise movement. Connected with these plates are straps 1:3, which in turn are connected with the strap 13. Also connected with the central strap 5 is a central plate I4, the ends of which are turned downwardly and engage with the edges of the holdfast. Passing through the plates S and engaging with the strap 5 are terrets l5, which also serve to holdsaid plates in place.

It will be noticed that the plates ll are connected with the straps l2, which straps are provided with loops 16, which engage with the shafts of a vehicle.

The invention will be found very efficient in use, and as the shafts are connected with the loops 1G of the holdfast any movement of the shafts, such as when the vehicle is traveling on an uneven road, will be compensated for by the movement of the holdfast, thus not only preventing injury to the saddle, but rendering it much more comfortable to the horse and preventing sore backs.

A saddle constructed according to our invention is very elastic and flexible, so thatit Vcan`be applied to horses of different sizes, and

by reason of the yielding movement of the holdfast will not injure the animal.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim isl. In a harness-saddle, the combination with the strap l, the lower strap connected therewith, the strips connected with the edgesV of the strap l, and the central strap secured to said strap l, of the movable holdfast supported by the strap l, the loops connected therewith adapted to be connected with the shafts of a vehicle and the belly-band connected with said loops, substantially as described.

2. In a harness-saddle, the combination with the strap l, the lower strap connected therewith and the movable holdfast, of the plates connected with said holdfast formed with segmental slots, the straps connected therewith provided with shaft-loops and the belly-band, substantially as described.
