PATENT OFFICE.
SHUBUTA, MISSISSIPPI.
HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,923, dated September 9, 1884.
' Application filed June 19,1884: (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIcERo O. FERRILL, of Shubuta, in thecounty of Clarke and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a horse-detacher shown in my Patent No. 297,367, dated April 22, 1884:; and it consists of an improved harness, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In. the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fore part of the harness, consisting of bio ist-collar, back-band, braces, and belly band. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a pair of thills,
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views. 7
In my aforesaid patent I have shown devices for attaching thills to a pair of hames directly,to dispense with all other parts of a ham ness except a collar and breeching, which latter is attached to the thills.
My present invention consists, in part, in adapting the ordinary breast-collar to be used in connection with said devices. To this end I provide a breast-collar, A, with a back-band, I), and a belly-band, O, which are connected thereto by means of the loops or buckles D. With this construction the back-band takes the place of the ordinary neck-yoke of a breastcollar, which is objectionable on account of its wearing away the mane of a horse. In order to support the breast-collar in proper position it is connected to the back-band by the straps or braces E, which are attached to the forward part of the collar and the upper part of the back-band at opposite sides. The loops or buckles D are provided with rings F, by which the horse is to be attached to the thills G. The thills G are provided with hitching and unhitching devices H, which are the same in construction as those shown in my aforesaid patent. These devices, however, are placed on the thills.
farther back from the ends of the thills than in my prior patent, to adapt them to engage the rings F at the horses sides.
My present invention further consists in the improved breeching I, consisting of a strip of steel or spring metal, J, inclosed in strips of a leather K L L, which are stitched together on opposite sides of the metal. To the ends of the metal and leather strips are riveted plates M, having perforations N in their ends, by which they are secured to the attachments O The attachments O consist of plates 0, which are bolted or riveted to the thills and parallel flanges p on top of said plates having each two sets of perforations, q
1', at their forward and rear edges. These parallel flanges incline inward from front to rear to correspond with the curve of the breeching. The plates M are placed between the said flanges of the two plates 0 and bolted therein by bolts 8. of perforations q r is to take up or let out the breeching to fit horses of different sizes.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with the thills and breeching, of the breast-collar, a back-band, 7o braces connecting the collar and back-band together, and the belly-ban d, and buckles having rings F, for connecting with the devices H on the thills, substantially as shown and described.
2. The breeching consisting of a metal strap inclosed in leather, substantially as shown and described.
3. The breeching having the perforated plates M at its ends, in combination with the 80 thills and the attachments 0, having parallel flanges provided with front and rear perforations qr, and bolts 8, for adj usting the breech ing, substantially as shown and described.
OIOERO G. FERRILL.
