STEPHEN A. NOLEN, OF MOQR ORY, ARKANSAS.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,205, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed April 19, 1892. Serial No. 429,722. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. NoLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Me- Grory, in the county of lVoodruff, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
My improvement relates to the construction of a pad-tree for gig, wagon, and other harness-saddles; and the objects of my improvement are to produce in an inexpensive manner said part of a harness, although rendering it flexible and self-adjustable to the back of a horse, yielding on one side or the other to its motion, and resting in an easy and comfortable manner upon its back. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a harnesssaddle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
In said drawings, Arepresents the jockey plates or sections of the pad-tree. Said sections can be made of leather, as shown on the left-hand side of Figs. 1 and 2, and may be padded on the under side, if desired, although I regard it as unnecessary and rather detrimental to their lasting quality, or they can be made of wood, as shown on the right-hand side of Figs. 1 and 2, as the manner in which they are fiexiblyconnected together render them self-adjustable. The flexible connection consists of a rectangular wire link B, having its front and rear portions arched upward to prevent any possibility of said portions exerting a pressure upon the backbone of the animal. To flexibly unite the lower ends of the link B to the top of the jockeyplates A, a top plate 0 and bottom plate D are used on top of each jockey-plate. The top plate 0 has an upwardly-turned crease therein, forming a loop 0 to receive the conmeeting-bars uniting the upwardly-arched portions of the link B. Under said loop a each plate 0 has a horizontal slot therein for the passage of the lower portions of the terrets E. Saidlower portions, after having been passed through said slot, are bent laterally under the plate 0 and are made to rest upon the bottom plate D. Said plate D is of larger size than the plate 0, and is secured, as well as said plate (3, to the leather or wood jockey-plate A by means of malleable-iron nails cl, that are clinched against the under side of said leather or wood. A few of said nails d are also made to pass through the upper end of the leather strap F, as shown on the left-hand side of Figs. 1 and 2. The lower end of said strap is provided with an adjustable loop f to receive one of the shafts of a vehicle. A corresponding strip F is shown secured to the wood j ockey-pad on the right-hand side of Figs. 1 and 2 by means of a loop 0 formed on the lower end of the plate C, said loop receiving one of the bars of a link 61 through which the upper portion of the strap F is passed. The lower portion of this strap has also an adjustable loop f to receive one of the shafts of a vehicle. The upwardly-arched front and rear portions of the wire link B are united together by a bentover metallic strap G,made to clasp said portions by means of rivets passing through said strap. The ends are bent over to form a hook G2 to receive the strap of the bridlebit. In the rear end loop of the strap G is placed a link g, to which the crupper-strap can be attached.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a harness-saddle, the combination of the jockey-plates, each having a metal plate zontal slot and the lower ends of a rigid ter- I11 testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in let passing through said slot and resting upon presence of two witnesses. the lower plate, with a Wire link B, uniting together the metal plates and the jookey- NOLEN' 5 plates, said link having its front and rear Witnesses:
portions arched upward, substantially as cle- FRED WVATSON,
scribed. T. S. NEAL.
