'IMPROVEMENT 1N SELF-ACTING GATES.
@ige rlgebnle rrftmt tniniigcse tctters atent rmt mnkiig pnt tf tige sume,
TO ALL WHOM VIT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, ALBERT C. SMITH, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee, have invented new and useful Improvement in'Self-Acting Gates, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
A represents the gate, which is made of a series of panels connected together and braced. Upon its top,"at each e'nd, are pulleys, a a, which alone connect it to the fence posts. C, D, and E are three fence posts placed at suitable distances from each other', and between whichV the gate is operated. Above the gate, between posts C and D, is a lever, F, having a weight, g, at its outer-end, and is pivoted to post D, at the point z. Secured to the outer face of this level', between the posts C D, is a metallic rod, b, upon which hangs the pulley a at the near end of the gate. There is a diagonal rod passing from the post D below its top to the topoi' post E, and upon which restsV the other pulley, a', of the gate H and H are two levers, at labout wagon-length in front and rear of the centre gate post D. These levers are each secured uponsmall studs or block thereon so that they readily turn.
and in the State of Iowa,
s`, e e, and pivoted g isa metallic red passing under a loop, t, near post D, and connects the two levers H and H at'their inner and opposite ends, as shown, while there are cords, r and awhichconneet the said levers I-I to' the lever F. It will be seen that the cord s passes from the near end of Vlever H, under a pulley, m, at the bottom of post D, to the weighty, near the end of' lever F; while the cord r passes from the far end of lever H', under pulley m, past post D, and to near the centre of the said lever F. I
This gate is intended t be opera-ted upon by the hub of a vehicle striking either of the levers H. By throwing the cap of either of the said levers inwards, the lever F is thrown upwards by 'means of the rod g and cords 1j e, which causes the gate pulley ato advance to post D, and pulley a to advance to post E, and the gate is opened and closed by the wagon hub striking the opposite lever and the gate resumes its normal condition. Having thus fully described `nnyinvention, what I c lairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination andV arrangement of' the gate A, lever E, and rolls bffl, and operated by the levers H H with their cords'rs, rod g` and pulleys, in the manner substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.v Intestimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day ot' December, 1866.
Leser e. SMITH.
