GEORGE P. CRAGIN, or sPoKANE, WASHINGTON.
ISASTE-'BOTTL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,806, dated September 12, 1895.
Application filed June 8, 1899. Serial No. 719,788. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. CRAGIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented neW and useful Improvements in Paste-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
MyA invention relates to that class of pastebottles which have a central well designed t-o contain water and serve as a receptacle for the paste-brush when not in use, so as to keep said brush soft and pliable and always ready for use.
It consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my improved paste-bottle with its cover in position and the pastebrush arranged in the central well. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating the paste-bottle as it appears when packed for shipment. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cover removed. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the bottle with the cover removed.
In the said drawings similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the several views.
My improved paste-bottle A is preferably of glass and circular in form and is provided with a central and preferably integral Well B, which rises from its bottom and is designed to contain water and serve as a receptacle for a paste-brush C when not in use in order to keep said brush soft and pliable and always in a fit condition for use. The well extends about the proportional distance illustrated above the side wall of the bottle and is provided at its upper end with exterior screw-threads a.
D is the bottle-cover, which may beand preferably is stamped in one piece of sheet metal. This cover comprises an annular inclined portion b, designed to rest over the annular paste-receiving portion of the bottle A, a marginal ange c, designed to rest in a rabbet CZ in the side Wall of the bottle, and a central portion e, which is threaded, as shown, to engage the threads a of well B and has an openingf for the passage of the paste-brush, as shown in Fig. l.
In preparing my improved paste-bottle for shipment the annular portion of the bottle is iilled with paste and the Well B, if desired, is illed with water, after which an annulus E, of oil-soaked cardboard or other suitable material, is placed over the upper edge of the side wail of the bottle and around the well B, and a disk F, cut in forming the annulus, is placed upon the upper end of the Well B. With this done the cover D is screwed on the well B, so as to clamp the annulus E against the wall of the bottle and the disk F against the upper end of the well, and thereby preclude leakage of either paste or `water.
When it is desired to use the paste-bottle,
the cover D is disconnected therefrom and' the annulus E and diskF are removed, after which the brush C, which is shipped separately from the bottle, is placed in the well B to soften it precedent to its being used to apply the paste. After the paste is used to the extent desired the cover D is replaced on the bottle, as shown in Fig. l, so as to prevent evaporation of the paste therein.
Paste-bottles such as at Apresent in use have central integral wells for Water and exterior screw-threads on their side walls and are equipped with brushes and covers which have threaded marginal flanges to engage the threads of the bottle and central projections to receive the brushhandle Such projections of the covers take up considerable room in shipment and are liable to be broken oit or bent out of shape, While the formation of the threads on the side Walls of the bottles entails making the bottles thick and heavy throughout and renders it necessary for the operator to grasp the greatest diameter of the covers in order to remove the same from the bottles. In my improved construction only the Well B need be made sufficiently heavy to bear threads, and in orderto remove the cover the operator has but to grasp and turn the small central portion e thereof. It will also be seen that in my improved construction no projection is oiered to take up additional space or be broken o in shipment, and the threads a are arranged such a dis- IOO tance above the paste as to preclude the paste getting upon said threads, and thereby setting the cover D on the same and rendering dicult the removal of the cover. Again, by reason of the Well B extending above the side Wall of the bottle there is no liability of water being thrown into the paste space by handling of the device and no danger of the paste when thin gaining access to the well and rendering the water therein unfit to receive the brush when not in use. It will further be observed that my improved construction admits of the employment of the desirable long brush, and by reason of the top of the well being open when the bottle is opened after shipment the brush may be placed in or removed from the well whenever desired Without removing the cover from the bottle.
I prefer to extend the well B above the side wall of the bottle for the reasons stated, but do not desire to be understood as confining myself to the same, as when desired the upper end of said well might rest iiush with or slightly below the upper edge of the side Wall ofthe bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with apaste-bottle having a central well extending above its side Wall and provided at its upper end with eX- terior screw-threads, and a removable Cover having an annular, intermediate portion, a depending, marginal fia-nge surrounding the upper edge of the side wall of the bottle, and
a central threaded portion c engaging the threads of the well and having an openingf in its top, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a paste-bottle having av central well extending above its side wall .and` provided at its upper end with exterior screw-threads, a removable cover having an annular, intermediate portion, a depending, marginal iiange surrounding the upper edge of the side wall of the bottle, and a central threaded portion e engaging the threads of the Well and having an openingf in its top, an annular, removable washer surrounding the well and interposed between the annular port-ion of the cover and the edge of the side wall of the bottle, and a removable disk washer interposed between the top of the central portion of the cover and the upper end of the well, substantially as specified;
3. The combination with a paste-bottle having a central Well provided with exterior screw-threads, and a removable cover havingan annular, intermediate portion, a depending marginal fiange surrounding the upper edge of the side wall of the bottle, and a eentral threaded portion e engaging the threads of the well, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of vtwo subscribing wit- DGSSQS.
