SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,222, dated August 29, 1899.

Be itknown that I, VIoToR M. MALATESTA, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, Packages, or Cartons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in paper boxes, packages, or cartons used by merchants within which to place coffee, teas, or other dry arti cles; and it consists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully set forth in the drawings and described and pointed out in the specification.

The invention resides more especially in the construction of the cover-flaps, the object being to so arrange the said flaps that the under may interlock one with the other in order to close or seal the package, box, or carton and to permit of its being readily opened without the necessity of tearing or damaging the package for the purpose of obtaining access to the contents thereof. By thus constructing the package, box, or carton the necessity of tying the same or pasting down the coverflaps is obviated, while at the same time the user is enabled to maintain the box, package, or carton closed at all times except when opened to remove part of its contents.

In order to comprehend the invention, reference must be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the box as open. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly broken away, illustrating the position of the outer cover-flap just prior to being closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view or development of the sheet or blankout of which the package is constructed.

In the drawings the letter A is used to indicate the blank or cardboard sheet'which when properly folded forms the body of the box or package. This blank is cut or stamped with the separated lower end flaps 1 2 3 4 and the separated upper end flaps 5 6 '7 8 and is preferably provided with the vertical creases a a u a and the longitudinal creases l) b,

which creases permit of the body being properly folded and of the end flaps being properly folded down or turned over, while at the same time dividing the body-blank into distinct sections which when the blank is folded form the front A and back A and the sides B and B of the package. The blank when folded is secured together to form the body of the box or package by pasting or gluing the lip 19 below the edge of the front A. After the body has been formed the bottom of the package is closed by turning the flaps 2, 4, 3, and 1 down upon each other, re-

spectively, and pasting or otherwise securing flap 1 to flap 3,which falls immediately thereunder. When thus secured, the package is in condition to receive the article to be placed therein for sale or shipment.

The front A at its upper end or juncture with the flap S is slotted along the longitudinal crease or fold-line b, so as to form an opening or pocket 11 within which fits the tongue 9 of the cover-flap 6, when the top or open end of the package is closed, Fig. 2. This opening 17 is intercepted by a semicircular cut-away portion N, which forms a finger-opening through which the lock-tongue 9 is exposed and which permits of the tongue being grasped by the operator to open the package.

When it is desired to close the open end of the package, flap 7 is first turned down, so as to lie adjacent to the contents thereof. This flap is cut away at its free end in order to provide an opening (1, through which the finger may be inserted to raise the said flap. Flap 5 is folded or turned down upon flap 7, and over flap 5 is laid flap 8, which is covered by flap 6, the tongue 9 of flap 6 passing through opening or pocket 11 as above described. To open the package, it is only necessary to release flap 6 by withdrawing tongue 9 from opening or pocket 5 when the remaining flaps will be free to be raised, flap 7 being raised by inserting the finger through the cut-away or notched portion d and exerting an upward pull or strain thereon. By thus forming the flap7 with a finger-opening the necessity of using a knife or other instrument to raise the flap in case it should stick, by reason of its snug fit, is,obviated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is

In a box or package vof the character described, the combination with a body thereof having a folding-line b and a pasting-flap a of a series of independent extensions of the front, back and sides of the body of the box or package each extending to said foldingline b and forming cover-flaps, said flaps designed to fold or lie one upon the other to cover or close one end of the box or package,

one of the said cover-flaps being provided with a tongue of less width than the flap, and the adjacent flap being provided with a finger-opening (Z, and the flap opposite the flap having the tongue being provided with a closed longitudinal slot at the juncture of said flap with the body side Within which opening or slot said tongue fits, and said lastmentioned body side being provided with a fin ger-openin g intercepting said longitudinal slot and constituting a downwardly-extending enlargement of the slot, substantially as and for the purpose described.
