'SCHOLARS COMPANION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,167, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed March 1, 1899.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZ F. BIESMEYER, a citizen of the United States,residing at (Vestphalia, in the county of Osage and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scholars Companions; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to scholars companions-that is, a device used for the purpose of carrying pens, pencils, and other paraphernalia used by school children.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, comparatively inexpensive of production, and exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed.
, With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device, showing it open; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing it closed.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the cylindrical body portion closed at both ends and provided in one of its sides with a longitudinal recess 2. One end of the body portion is provided with a fixed annular shoulder 3, and the other end is formed with a small compartment 4 and has an exterior thread 5 to receive the cap 6.
7 denotes the rotatable cover, which is in the form of a cylinder and is provided with an opening 8, which registers with the longitudinal recess 2 of the body portion. This cylindrical cover is slipped upon the body portion until one end abuts against the fixed shoulder, and the cap is now screwed upon the other end of the body portion and subserves the purposes of closing the small compartment at the end of the body portion, of clamping and securing the cover in closed position, and of acting as a stop-shoulder to prevent the accidental disengagement of the cylindrical cover with the body portion. The longitudinal recess is adapted to contain penholders, pencils, and devices of a kindred nature, while the compartment at the end of the body portion is adapted to contain rubber erasers, pen-points, pins, and the like.
From the foregoing description, taken 1n Serial No. 707,362. (No model.)
connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation.
The device may be made at small cost and will be found to be much more useful than the little boxes now so commonly employed by school children in carrying their pens and pencils, as it is not so apt to open and drop the contents as are the boxes, for the reason that when the cylindrical cover is turned to close the recess of the body portion the screw-cap may then be screwed tightly up against the end of the cylindrical cover, and thereby clamp it in its closed position.
It will of course be understood that variouschanges in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a scholars companion, the combination of a cylindrical body portion having a longitudinal recess and having a fixed shoulder at one end and screw-threads at the other end, a cylindrical cover or sleeve loosely fitting the exterior of the body portion having a longitudinal opening adapted to register with the recess in the body portion, and a screw-cap engaging the sleeve to hold it in position on the body portion and for clamping and securing the same in closed position.
2. In a scholars companion, the combination of a cylindrical body portion having a longitudinal recess, a fixed collar at one end and a compartment at the other end, a cylindrical sleeve or cover loosely fitting the outside of the body portion having a longitudinal opening adapted to register with the recess in the body, anda screw-cap for closing the end compartment, for engaging and securing the sleeve in position and for clamping said sleeve in closed position, substantially as described.
