UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. OSBORNE, OF EXETER, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GOLDEN HART, OF SAME PLACE.
PORTABLE H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,966, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed March 22,1899. Serial No. 710,094. (No model.)
' may be removed from or placed in a vehicle,
as desired.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a foot-warmer which will not burn the vehicle or clothes of the person whose feet are being warm and which is absolutely safe under all circumstances.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a foot-warmer for vehicles embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my heater. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof with the top raised.
In the drawings, A designates a box or casing which has in the walls B thereof the openings O, and in the front wall of the box is the glass-covered sight-opening E. In the center of the bottom of the box is the rest F, in which is adapted to rest and be held the heater or lamp G, which may be readily removed from the box to be cleaned and filled. Hinged upon the top of the back edge is thelid or cover H, which is provided with the large openings J, which are surrounded by the series of smaller openings K, and depending from the under side of this lid, directly over the burner of the lamp, is the circular deflector L, which causes the flame of the lamp to be spread over the whole under surface of the lid or cover, which is covered by the sheet of asbestos M, thus causing the whole box to be heated, and by reason of the openings in the walls and lid of the box a free circulation of air is caused, and thus the air is heated and passes out of the box to warm the feet of the person in the vehicle. Parallel with the openings 0 and K, I secure the cleats or guides P, in which are adapted to slide the doors or slides Q, which allow the regulation of the amount of air supplied to the box and the amount of heated air to escape as desired.
From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that the lamp is placed in the rest provided in the box and lighted, the lid being closed, and the heater is then ready for use and may be placed in the vehicle so that it warms the feet of the.
persons sitting therein.
It is evident that I provide a very compact, simple, durable, and inexpensive portable heater for this purpose and one which is very useful and practical, as the entire heater, except the lining, is made of metal.
I claim A foot-warmer, consisting of a rectangular box or casing provided with circulation-openings in its sides near the lower edges thereof, slides adapted to control said openings, a lid adapted to be hinged to and cover said box and provided with openings, a circular deflector carried by said lid, a sheet of asbestos provided with openings adapted to correspond with the lids openings and adapted to line the lid, and a removable lamp adapted to rest in said box directly beneath the deflector.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. OSBORNE.
