UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WELSH, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,836, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed May 14,1898. Serial No. 680,730. (No model.)
10 al whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WELSH, of
Providence, in the county of Providence and- State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in cabinets for storing merchandise, documents, or articles of various kinds.
The object of the invention is to so construct a cabinet that the 1 contents shall be more fullyprotected from dust, while the particular contents of any subdivision of the cabinet may be accessible without undue labor or complicated movements.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved dust-excluding box for cabinets so constructed and mounted that it may be automatically opened bya simple movement and closed by a reverse movement.
The invention consists in the construction of the cabinet-frames, in combination with the box-lid hangers carried thereby.
The invention also consists in the construction of the hangers,in combination with a suitable box lid or cover.
The invention still further consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
Figure 1 represents a side View of one of the cabinet-frames, showing the construction of the same and the hangers secured thereto. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of one of the cabinet-boxes in place on the cabinet-frame, showing the lid in two positions 'to illustrate the construction of the lid and the manner in which its pins are engaged with the hangers.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In the drawings I have shown a construction of cabinet-frame which is particularly adapted for use in cabinets of this nature, and it should be understood that any number of these frames may be used and that each frame may be constructed to accommodate any desired number of the filing-boxes,- depending upon the height of the cabinet. These frames comprise the front standards,
the rear standards, as 6, connected by the cross members 7 7, having the laterally-extending plates 8 8, on which plates the boxes may slide. On the plates 8 S are carried the strips, as 9, which serve as guides for-the sides of the boxes. On the members 7 7 are secured the lid-hangers for sustaining the lid when the box is removed, a pair of these hangers being supplied for both the back and the front ends of the lid. The rear hangers extend considerably below the front hangers, each comprising the vertical member 10 and the concave steps 11 and 12. The front hangers, secured to the members 7 7 at a suitable distance from the rear hangers, have the depending portion 13 and the seats 14 and 15,
. which seats are separated by the upward extension or shoulder 16, while the material of the seat 15 is extended upward to form the guard 17.
The box 18 is of any convenient size and is rectangular in shape to slide on the plates 8 8 of a pair of the frames. This box may have any suitable pull 19, and at one or both sides of the box, near its upper portion, is secured or formed in part with the box side the cam 20. As the box is intended to contain articles which it is essential to protect from dust, I provide a lid 21, having the general outline of the box and furnished with the depending lip 22, closely fitting into the box at the front and sides thereof and cut away, as at 23, Fig. 2. This internal lip 22 is omitted across the rear of the lid, and an outer lip 24 is substituted therefor. In order to prevent the contents of the box from catching on the front portion of the internal lip in pushing the box inward, I provide the lid with the inner surface 25 inclining from the lower edge of the forward portion of the lip 22 rearwardly and upwardly, as shown, so that the contents will be crowded down as this inclined surface passes over the same. v
Having thus provided a box and a lid whereby the contents may be protected from dust and-which can be used. as an ordinary drawer, the lid being removed by hand when the box is withdrawn from the cabinet, my object is now to provide means on the lid which may be automatically engaged by the lid-hangers when the box is withdrawn, so
that the lid may automatically seat itself on the box when the box is pushed inward. To this end I provide the sides of the lid at its rear portion with the outwardly-extending pins, as 26, which when the box is in its normal position rest in the steps 11 11 of the rear hangers, while the front portions of the' lid at its sides are supplied with cams, as 27, each having an outwardly-extending pin, as 28. 18, the shoulders 16 of the front hangers prevent the forward movement of the lid-pins 28 until the cam 20, riding under the cam 27, lifts the lid sufliciently to free the pins 28 from said shoulders. The lid then moves outward until the guard 17 of the seats intercept the pins 28, and the cams and 27 having now passed each other the front portion of the lid drops until the pins 28 are supported by the seats 15. On the forward movement of the lid the pins 26 move out of the steps 11 11 and when the box has moved sufficiently outward drop to the step 12, by which means this portion of the lid is supported in the position shown in dotted linesin Fig. 2. In replacing the box in the -cabinet the rear end of the box is entered between the guides VVhen it is sought to draw out the box 16. The lid may then move inward until the pins bear against the hangers, at which time the cams have moved past each other and the lid is free to drop into position to close the box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cabinet, a frame comprising the standards 5 and 6, the members 7 7 secured thereto and having the lateral plates 8 8, the rear hangers having the vertical members 10 and the steps 11 and 12, secured to the rear portion of the members 7, and the front hangers having the portions 13, the seats 14: and 15 separated by the shoulder 16 and the guard 17 secured to the members 7 7 near the front portions of said members.
2. The combination with a cabinet having rear hangers comprising the members 10 and the steps 11 and 12, and the front hangers having the portions 13, the seats 14 and 15,
the shoulders 16, and the guard 17, of a box mounted to slide below the hangers and having the cams 20, and a cover for the box having the pins 26 adapted to engage the rear GEORGE wELsu.
