HYDROCARBON GENERATOR AND BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,779, dated August 29, 1899.

drocarbon generator and burner composed'of the smallest number of parts possible, which parts are so constructed and disposed in relation to each other and maintained in position to alford a free and unobstructed passage for the dame Without the use of bolts and nuts or analogous fastening devices. By means of my invention I am thus enabled to provide a generator and burner consuming a minimum amount of oil, yielding a more perfect and economical vaporization and combustion, and producing a flame of intense heat substantially free from smoke, soot, odor, and noise.
A further feature of my invention is the separable character of the apparatus, which enables the user tov readily take the same apart for the purpose ofcleaning or reversing the same when the apparatus is to be used as a down burner.
These objects above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention, which consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection', and Yararrangement of parts, as hereinafter morev fully set forth and then pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a top or plan View of a generator and burner constructed according to and embodying my invention, one of the deflecting-plates being removed. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
In said drawings, A designates a base having an inclined face provided with supporting-lugs a d and an oil-pan B at its front and center, and O denotes a flange or rim extend- 'ing around said base A.
Upon the base A, at its ends,y are arranged standards D D, and at the back of said base is arranged a standard E, and opposite thereto at the front of the base is a standard F, `the standard E being made a trilie higher than the end standards D D and a trie lower than the standard F in order to properly support the front of the vaporizing-retort O and the flattened portion J of the frame Pbelow the rear of said vaporiZing-retort, n
G denotesa frame comprising the hollow cylindrical ends H H, united by a curved connecting-section I, provided midwayof the distance between the cylindrical ends H H with a attened portion J, having the apertures b b therein. K K denote supporting-brackets which are formed integral with the ends H H and extend outward andjipward therefrom, said'frame G being cast integral with the base A and the standards D D and E, whereby to maintain said frame G permanently in position above the base A.
L L denote mixers each composed of an annular section M, corresponding in diameter with and adapted to be supported upon the cylindrical ends H H and form a continuation thereof. Vithin said cylindrical ends H H are supported, by means of radial arms d d, the central vapor-shells N N, having tapering openings N N therein, the radial arms d d being. made integral with the annular sections M H and arranged adjacent to the lower edges thereof, but free of the inner surfaces of the cylindrical ends H H, and the vaporshells N N being so disposed within said annular sections M M, and the cylindrical ends H H that the tops of said vapor-shells shall be Hush with' the upper edges of the annular sections M M and thc lower ends of said vapor-shells project slightly beyond .the lower edges ofthe cylindrical ends H H.
O denotes `a vaporizing-retort supported at its back uponthe connecting-section of the frame G and at its front upon the top of the standard F andmaintained in position by means of the lugs e e, which depend from the rear of the retort and extend into the apertures b Z1 of the liattened portion .I of the frame IOO G. The said retort comprises an oil-receivl against the basev instead of upward against ing portion O', provided atits opposite ends with short pipe-sections P P', the section P' being provided with a cap P2, while the section Pis connected bya pipe Q with the source of oil-supply.
O2 denotes the vaporizin g portion of the retort,the base of which is provided with a raised central portionf, whereby to form annular pan portion g for the oil to be vaporzed, and R denotes a vapor-delivery pipe which enters the retort from below and extends into said retort almost to the top thereof. From the lower end of said pipe R extend the branch pipe-sections R R', the ends of which are adapted to rest upon the lugs a a of the base A, and provided in their upper portions, directly below the centers of the vapor-shells t N N, with vapor-outlets h h, and in the top of the retort O2, directly above the place where the delivery-pipe R enters the same, is provided an opening having a plug S, provided with recesses t' t'.
T denotes a U-shaped support provided upon the under side of its horizontal portion with studs 7' j, adapted to enter the recesses 't' z' of the plug S, whereby to hold said support T in position upon the top of the retort O2, and U U denote deiecting-plates pivotally supported upon the ends of the supporting-brackets K K and the support T, the deflecting-plates U U being provided upon their upper surfaces with loop-sections 7c 7a, whereby the same may be removed.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: After the initial ring a small quantity of oil is admitted by the pipe Q to the retort, which, having become intensely hot, at once vaporizes the oil and causes the same to collect in the dome-shaped top of the retort, where by contact with the top of said retort the said vapor is converted into a fixed gas and thence conducted through the deliverypipe R and branches R R and discharged from the outlets h, ignited and forced into the central vapor-shells N N of the mixers y L L, where the vapor unites with a proper proportion of oxygen, and the mixture thence projected against the under sides of the deliecting plates U U, when the combustion takes place.
Where it is desired to use the apparatus as a down burner, it simply becomes necessary to remove the deflecting-plates U U and the support T therefor, remove the plug S and the delivery-pipe R, and then secure the delivery-pipe R in an inverted position in the top of the retort and insert the plug S in the opening in the under side of the retort. Theoperation in this form will be substantially like that above described except that the llame will be projected downward the deilecting-plates.
Without limiting myself to the details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a hydrocarbon generator aud burner,
a mixer comprising an outer shell consisting of two cylindrical sections, one of said sections resting upon the other, and a central removable shell having a tapering opening therein and provided with integral radial arms, said arms being arranged to contact with said outer shell, and a burner having a discharge-orifice in alinement with the opening through the central vapor-shell.
2. ln a hydrocarbon generator and burner, a mixer comprising an outer drum composed of two cylinder-sections disposed one upon the other, a cent-ral vapor-shell having ay tapering opening therein, and radial arms upon its outer surface adjacent to its top, said arms being integral with the vapor-shell and the upper cylinder-section, and extending downwardly beyond the lower edge of said upper cylinder-section and into the lower cylinder-section andadapted to contact with the inner surface thereof adjacent to its upper edge, a burner having a discharge-orifice in alinement with the opening through the central vapor-shell, and means for supporting said mixer and burner in operative relation, substantially as specied.
3. A hydrocarbon generator and burner, comprising a base, standards, and a curved frame portion, said frame having a flattened i intermediate portion provided with apertures,
a Vaporizing-retort having depending lugs at its rear adapted to fit into said apertures and thus permit the rear portion of the ret-ort to rest upon said flattened portion of the curved frame, the front portion of the retort being supported by one of the standards, an oilsupply and vapor-delivery pipe connected to and communicating with said retort, a mixer, and a burner, substantially as described.
4. A base or support for hydrocarbon generators and burners, comprising a base portion A, end standards D, front and rear standards E, F, a curved frame having an intermediate flattened portion provided with apertures, cylindrical portions H, H, and bracket portions K, K, all constructed in a single piece and for the purpose shown and described.
