COAL-OlL-GAS BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.' 416,986, dated December 10, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IUDVIG J. NV. BIRN, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal- Oil-Gas Burners, of which the following isa speeilication.
My invention relates to that class of oilburners designed to be placed in the iire-box of an ordinary heating or cooking stove for burning therein oil or gas generated therefrom to heat the stove instead of ordinary fuel; and the object of my improvements is to furnish a burner which will nrst convert the oil into gas and then burn the same without danger of explosion or waste of oil. I have attained this obj ect in the burner constructed as illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section of such burner on the line l l of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the gas generator or retort on the line at which the cover is attached, and shows an interior plan view of such generator. Fig. iis a horizontal section on line t 4C of Fig. 1, showing a plan of the burner and gas-chain ber. Fig. 5 is a central Vertical section showing a modification. Fig. G is a horizontal section on line C G ot' Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation showing an oil-reservoir connect-ed with the burner as applied in a stove, the latter being shown in a View representing a vertical section through the lire-box.
In the drawings, A designates the gas-generator,which consists of a metal shell made in halves, which are adapted to be connected by bolts or otherwise at (t, so as to form a gas-tight chamber within. rl`he lower half of said shell is provided with an interior cup a', which is secured at its bottom to said shell, and extends up nearly to the interior of the shell at the top, forming a chamber a2 outside of said cup and within the shell, which chamber communicates with the interior ot the cup through the space between the upper edge of the cup and the interior ofthe shell at the top. An oil-pipe a3 is extended up through the center ot' the apparatus and communicates through two large branches a4 with said chamber a2 through the open end of said branches at a5.
B designates the gas-burner, and C a gasreservoir. Said reservoir is connected with .the gas-generator below the cup a', and has the gas-burners placed around on the out-Y side ot it, so that the flame will strike the bottom of said generator. In the connection between the gas-reservoir and said generator there are perforations or openings l) b, which form passages from the cup a to said gasreservoir, and through the walls of said reservoir and the gas-burner B are perforations through which pipes b pass for allowing the gas to pass out from said reservoir into said burners. Said burners are open at the bottom, as shown at b2, Fig. l, to allow the air to pass up through them.
The gas reservoir and burners are connected at the bot-tom with a flange or cup B2, adapted to hold a small quantity of oil.
In the modification one enlarged gas-burner I3 is placed in the center, with the gas-reservoir C surrounding it, and having the pipes b projected inward toward the center of such burner. There is a shut-off in the oil-pipe ai; outside of the stove, as shown at d, Fig. 7, whereby the How of oil is regulated or shut off to put the tire out. The oil may be forced in by gravity when the supply-reservoir D is elevated above the fire-box of the stove, or by means of airpressure within the supply reservoir if it is located on a level with orbelow the tire-box. Gas is generated from the oil in the enlarged branches a" of the gaspipe a3, and in the chamber a2 when heated, and passes over into the cup a', and thence down through the pipes b to the gas-reservoir C, said cup serving to retard the flow ot' oil into said reservoir before being converted into gas or vapor. l
The operation is as follows: A little oil is poured in the cup B2 and ignited. This heats the bottom of the generator. The shutoff is then opened, so as to allow a little oil to pass in through pipe a3, and when sufficiently heated the oil may be turned on to give the full heating capacity. The gas will be ignited from' the flame in the cup B2 and continue burning, and keep up the supply after the oil is exhausted from said cup as long as the oil-supply from pipe a3 continues.
