To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR HERBERT PIN- NOCK, of Kingston, Jamaica, have invented a new and Improved Chair, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a chair of the reclining sort adapted especially for use on the decks of steamers; and the object of the invention is to construct a chair which will not be liable to accidental collapse and which at the same time may be readily adjusted to conveniently seat the user in various postures.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing the chair at" an adjustment different from that shown in Fig. 1. f

The chair has two main bars 3, whichare rigidly joined to each other by rungs 4, and each of said bars has a seat-bar 5, pivoted to the inner side' thereof. Each bar 3 also has a leg-bar 6, pivoted to its outer side, the pivots of the leg-bars being at equal elevations and the pivots of the seat-bars being also at equal elevations. The seat-bars 5 are connected at their front ends by a rung 7 and at their rear ends by a series of parallel rungs 8, equally spaced apart. The leg-bars 6 are connected at their lower ends by a rung 9 and at intermediate points by transversely-extending cleats 10, rigidly fastened thereto. The cleats 10 are two in number, and the cleat nearest the main bars 3 is provided with two latches 11, which are pivoted to the bar 5. The main bars 3 are provided with a flexible seat proper, 12, formed of canvas or the like, which is connected at its upper end to the rung 4 and at its lower end to the rung 7 of Serial No. 709,932. the seat-bars 5. In using this seat the lower ends of the bars 3 are rested on the ground to form the front legs of the chair and the lower ends of the bars 6 are rested on the ground to form the rear legs of the chair.

The seat-bars 5 are extended horizontally between the cleats 10 of the leg-bars 6, and the seat-bars are adjustably secured on the legbars by means of the latches 11, which may be thrown downward to the position shown in the drawings, so as to extend between any two of the rungs 8, and thus hold the seatbars and all of the other parts of the chair in fixed adjustment. This arrangement is such that it will be impossible for -the chair to collapse accidentally, such collapse being only possible by the intentional raising of the latches 11 and the withdrawal of the seat-bars 5 from between the cleats 10.

The chair may be adjusted to any desired positionas, for example, either one of the two shown in the drawingswhich adjustment may be readily efiected by lifting the latches 11, as described.
