Letters Patent No. 653,113, dated March 19, 1867.
-IMPRCVED WINDOW PASTE'NING.
TO ALL YHOB IT MAY ONOERN': Y A
'Be it known that/ i, J. D. SMITH, of Naugatuclc, in the county of New Havemnd State of Connecticut,
'have invented a new und improved .Window Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the 'following is a'full,
clear-,and exact description thereof, which willenable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, refer.- ence heilig had to the accompanying drawings, yforming part of this specifica-tion, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a window with my improvement applied to its sashes.

This invention relates to an improvement in tha-t class of window fastenings'whieh are composed of a bolt provided with a spiral spring, the bolt working in metallic thimbles fitted in the stile of the sash. flh'e inven-. tionl consists in an improvement in the thimbles, whereby the saine-are retained in the stile, being prevented from casually slipping out therefrom, a contingency of frequent occurrence with the ordinary thimbles, and which renders the fastening useless.
Arepresents a-windowy frame, and B B the sashes, ittedvtherein in the usual way. C is a-slide-bolt, which may be constructed of malleableeast iron, or other metal, having a. square or rectangular form, a, at one end, with a shoulder, I, at Aits inner part, and of round o1'- cylindrieal form from the shoulder b to its opposite end, and somewhat curved at said end, as shown at c, (see more particularly tig. 2.) D D represent the two thimbles,. in which the bolt C works.' These thimbles nre also'of metal, and have screw-threads on their-exterior. The thimble D is screwed into the .outer end cf the horizontal 4hole d, bored in the stile e of the sash, in which the bolt is fitted, said .thimble being screwed intosaid hole, with the bolt C fitted in it; and the other thimble D is simply driven into said hole, thewood,-after the thimhle is driven in, filling the thread of the screw,l and pre; venting the thi'mhle from slipping out. "llo insure this result it will of course be understood that therdiameter of thimble D, including thc thread of the screw, must exceedra trifle the diameter of the outer end of the hole d in the stile of the sash. 'lhe rectangular' end a of the bolt catches over shoulderfon metallic plugs E, driven 'in the sides of the lwindow frame, the spring F, which is placed on the bolt between the two thimbles, having a tendency to throw or keep said end out from the sash.
Having thus described rnyinvention, what I claim as ne\v,' and desire to secure by`Letters Ps1-tent., is-' I The combination of theslide-bolt C with the thimbles D D', provided with screw-tlneads on their exterior surfaces, substantially :1s :1nd for-the purpose herein set forth'.
