IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BAILE TIES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, DANIEL M. SECHLER, of Cincinnati, 1n the-county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Cotton-Bnle '.lie;` and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thcsame, suilicient to enable one skilled in the art to which the invention.'appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in whichi Figure l is a perspective View.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section.

This tie consists of two loops, -arou'nd which the respective ends of thel hoop are bent and replicated. vThe smaller loop is then passed through the larger at a certain point,- and being'slipped back is retained at the nur rower portion of the opening in the longer portion. In the drawings- A is the larger piece or loop, commonly called thc buckle, and B is the smaller loop, which is engaged by being passed through the former, catching behind or below it, o1v outside, according as it may be entered. The buckleA has al general square lform, with a slot in it of about the width of the hoop band, say ont.- inch. This slot is indicated by the figures 4 4 4 4 at the corners.l In -the edge of the slot `just mentioned are notches, 5 -5, adapted to allow the loop B to pass through.

In operation', the end C of the hoop band isfolded round th'e bar d of the buckle, and replicated underneath The band being then drawn around the bale, the other end, D, oi`- the hoop is folded around the loop B, having the hoop of such a. length as will permit theloop B to be passed through the notches 5 5. The loop B is now retracted a short distance underneath the buckle, the excess of width of the loop B over the widyt-hofthe slot v 4 4, preventing its withdrawal; The width of the aperture in loop B corresponds to fit the width of the hoop, and the notches 5 54 allow the loop B to pass. The hoop D, occupying the Width of the slot 4 4, cannot shift laterally, and theloop B, having a continuous margin, cannot get loosefrom the hoop, but is always in position and can be depended upon. l l I am aware that the hoop has been folded around, a pin or plug has been' placed behind the, buckle to prevent its retraction, but such pins are liable to be displaced orl to slip out when a fall of 'the bale jerks it loose suddenly, as may sometimes occur I In my bale tie, each end of the hoop is folded around a. loop, and one is passed through the other, neither being in danger of displacement either from the hoop or from each other, when once fairly engaged.

Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s The arrangement off-the buckle A, constructed with notched slot 4-5, and the loop B, adapted and proportioued to engage with the buckle, substantially as described and represerited. I I claim the loop B, for attachment to one end of the hoop, and adapted to lock within a buckle, or equivalent deviee, on the other end of the hoop.
