Be it known that I, ALAXANDER BASTAM, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Sprinklers, of

holds alarge quantity of water, and the sprinkling devices are attached to the under side of the tank or reservoir or at its rear end or side, near the bottom. The driver, who also has control of the means for starting and stopping the flow of the water through the sprinkling devices, is located at some distance therefrom at the front of the tank or reservoir. The months or discharging-orifices of the sprinkling devices are usually at some distance from the tank or reservoir, being usually at the extreme lower ends of discharging-pipes leading from the tank to the mouth or discharging-orifices. In the use of these sprinkling devices it is desirable to discharge water freely on the streets as the tank is hauled along, and it is equally desirable to avoid discharging water from the sprinkler onto the street-crossing walks over which the sprinkler is hauled in beingdrawn along the street for considerable distance while discharging the entire supply of water therecharge of water onto the cross-walk as the sprinkling-cartpasses over it. v

My present invention is directed chiefly to providing means of specific construction for ery of a shower of water therefrom directly afterward when required and incidentally to improvement in the means for discharging the water in a satisfactory shower.

, The invention consists of the devices, their parts, and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, or their equivalents. i

.In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a street-sprinkler discharging device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal central section of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view from the under side of the mouth of the discharging-pipe or sprinkler. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section of a slightly-modified form of the device shown in Fig. 1.

In the drawings, 5 is a pipe adapted to lead from the tank or reservoir of a street-sprinkler and terminating at its rear and lower extremity in a discharging mouth or orifices. The pipe 5 at its upper extremity is connected'onto a continuation of pipe leading from the tank and at its lower extremity is coupled to and discharges into a mouthpiece or sprinkler-head 6 The sprinkler-head 6 is also a short piece of pipe terminating at its lower extremity in a bent or curved end 7, forming an open downwardly discharging mouth disposed nearly at a right angle to the axisof the pipe 5 and the straight continuation thereof of the upper portion of the sprinkler-head 6. This construction provides a terminal chamber 8 in the sprinkler-head having a concave roof, and at the junction of the main or body portion of thesprinklerhead 6 with the chamber 8 there is anencircling shoulder 9, facing to the rear, and I provide a flat or plate valve 10, hinged to the sprinkler-head at its lower edge andadapted to close water-tight upwardly against the shoulder 9. This valve 10 is provided with a forwardly-projecti11g lug 11, which is connected by a rod 12 to the extremity of a crank 13, fixed on a shaft 1%, passing transversely through and thereby mounted revolnbly in the body of the sprinkler-head 6. This shaft lei has a crank 15 fixed thereon, which is provided with a rod 16, extending therefrom to the vicinity of the driver, whereby he can conveniently operate and control the valve 9. It will be understood that by means of this valve 10, located at the very extremity of the discharging-pipe 5 and its sprinklerhead, the discharge of water therefrom can be promptly started and as promptly and completely stopped by the attendant, thereby enabling him to shut off the showering of water at the opportune moment on arriving at a cross-Walk and of starting the How again immediately after passing the cross-walk, thus avoiding either the showering the crosswalk with water or permitting any considerable amount of dripping of water thereon.

In some places water is employed for sprinkling streets that has more or less of foreign matter in it, as straws, grass, or other articles that are liable to and do clog the sprinkling devices in the head 6, and when this occurs it is necessary to remove the sprinkler-head 6 from the pipe 5, and this can be done by unscrewing it at the junction 17, and it is desirable that this should be done without either being flooded with water from the pipe 5 or without having in some difficult way to remove the water. F or this purpose I provide a flat valve 18, hinged at one side to the pipe 5 and closing forwardly against an annular shoulder 19 therefor in the pipe 5 near its rear extremity. ,This valve 18 is connected by a rod 20 to the crank-arm of a shaft 21, passing transversely through and mounted rotatably in the pipe 5. The shaft 21 is provided with a crank-handle 22, whereby the valve 18 can be opened or closed, as desired.

The sprinkler-head G is provided with a lid or dam 23, hinged to the under side of the head 6 and extending rcarwardly across and closely adjacent to the mouth of the sprinklerhead. A projecting extremity 24; of this lid or dam is provided with a hand-screw 25, turning therethrough against the under side of the sprinkler-head, whereby the proximity of this lid or dam to the edge of the mouth of the sprinkler-head may be regulated and adjusted. An inner lid or plate 26, slightly dished in form, is hinged at one edge to the sprinkler-head and is interposed between the dam 24 and the mouth of the sprinkler-head, being adapted to receive thereon the discharge of water from the sprinkler-head and cause it to be discharged though a thin space provided thereforby adjustment of the parts, the space occurring between the plate 26 and the edge of the mouth of the sprinkler-head. The position of the plate 26 is regulated and adjusted by a hand-screw 27, turning through the lid 21 against the plate 26.

To secure a more satisfactory showering of water discharged from the sprinkler-head than is accomplished by the use alone of the plate 26, I provide a series of recesses orslots 28 in the edge of the wall 7 of the sprinklerhead, located at little distances apart around the rear and side portions of the wall at its edge, the walls of which recesses are preferably beveled laterally in the manner indicated in Fig. 3. These slots 28 permit the water to flow in small streams that break up into showers or drops even when the plate 26 is closed up very near to or quite tight against the edge of the mouth of the sprinkler-head, and correspondingly to increase flow when the plate 26 is released and adjusted at alittle distance therefrom.

In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. i the valve 10, located at and closing against the shoulder 9, is omitted and a valve 10 is employed, which is hinged on the front or initial extremity of the sprinkler-head 6 and is adapted to close against the end of the sprinkler-head. This valve is connected by a rod 12 to the crank of the shaft 14-, which is adapted to be operated and controlled in the manner of the crank 14: in the form of device shown in Figs. 1, 2, and

hat I claim as my invention is 1. A street-sprinklerhead,comprisingashort tubular pipe the discharging extremity of which is turned laterally forming a laterallyopening mouth, a lid or dam in front of and substantially across the open mouth, and a plate-valve hinged in the head and so disposed as to close inwardly to a seat at a distance from the dam and against the flow of the water and to open outwardly to a position close to the lid or dam and out of the channel of the water.

2. A discharging device for a street-sprinkler comprising a discharge-pipe, a valve therein near its outer extremity, means for operating the valve, a sprinkler-head secured detachably to the diseharge-pipe, a valve in the sprinkler-head closing to a seat thereon, a rock-shat t transversely of the sprinkler-head, a rod connecting the valve to the shaft eccentrically, and means for operating the rockshaft.

3. In a street-sprinkler head, a substantially annular mouth formed by the open latterally-turned end of the sprinkler-head provided with a series of slots or recessed apertures cut in the wall of the mouth at its edge, and a lid arranged opposite to and so as substantially to close the open end or mouth of the sprinkler-head.
