RUDOLPH LIEBMANN, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND JULIUS F. TOUSSAINT, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,547, dated August 8, 1899. lication filed June '7, 1899. Serial No. 719,685. 7 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUDOLPH LIEBMANN, residing at East Orange, county of Essex, and. State of New Jersey, and JULIUS F. TOUS-; SAINT, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements ,in badges; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and attractive badge and a novel means for attaching the badge portion, which is made in the manner of a ribbon, to a wire stem, preferably provided with a pair of pin-points and a crossbar on which a portion of the ribbon is ar-. ranged and held and a clamping means connected with these parts of the badge, with ,a View of cheapening the cost of construction in assembling the parts and also providing a more secure method of attaching the ribbon portion to the head-piece of the badge.
Another principal object of this invention is to avoid the objectionable use of paste or glue for attaching a portion of the ribbon around the crossbar connected with the pin, as heretofore, and to increase thedurability and utility of the badge and, furthermore, to obtain other advantages and results, such as will be more fully described in the accompanying specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
The invention therefore consists in the, improved construction of ribbonbadge and pin therefor herein described and also in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the parts. thereof, all of whichwill be fully set forth in the accompanying specification.
The invention is clearlyillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view oflthe badge emthe'principles of our present invention. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same, and
. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the badge. Fig.4is a perspective view of one form of wire stem or pin to be employed in connection with the ribbon badge for securing the latter in position upon a garment. Figs. 5 and 6 are a face and rear view, respectively, of a ribbon and pin connectedtherewith before securing the same to the top or head-piece at the upper edge of the. ribbon; and Fig. 7 ,is a back view of the upper portion of a ribbon badge and head-piece of a slightly-modified form of construction;
Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the said above-describedyiews to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawings, aindicatesa piece of ribbon or other suitable fabric, the face of which is suitably ornamented and may bear an insignia, design, emblem, or the like, as-will be 1 clearly understood. The back of said ribbon is indicated by the reference-letter a, and secured at or near the upper transverse edge a of said ribbon 04 is thecross-barb, of a piece of wire orpin b The said wire or pin 1) is provided at its lower end witha pin-point b and at its upper end is bent, as at 19?, to form an arm I), which extends to one side of the main body portion of said stemor wire I) at right angles to said stem, or approximately so, and is connected, by means of a loop or curved portion 19 with the cross-bar b. I Said cross-bar b is preferably provided at its free end with a -pin-.point bflall of which is clearly illustrated in Fig.4. 7 Then the pin-piece or holding-stem forsecuringtheribbon badge to a garment is madein this manner, the curved part b at the upper endof the main portion b and the arm I) is preferably made to lie in close contact with a portion of the cross-bar b,
thereby providing a suitable holding or clampenabled to do away with the lap or folded part of the ribbon and a saving of paste or glue by dispensing with the use of the latter.
By the arrangement of the bent or curved part b which forms a knee, when in close holding contact with a portion of the crosspiece I) a suitable holding or clamping means is provided, which permits of the proper arrangement of the ribbon upon the said barb, but prevents the lateral displacement of the ribbon therefrom, as will be clearly understood.
A head-piece c of sheet metal, which can be suitably ornamented, may be employed, if desired, said head-piece or top bar, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 1, 2, and 3, consisting, essentially, of a pair of clamping members 0 and 0 which are connected along their upper edges by a curved part Between these two clamping members 0 and c the upper edge a of the ribbon a, with the cross-bar b, and the arm b attached to the ribbon, is laid, the said member 0 having an opening or cut-away portion 0, and the curved knee portion 1) of the wire stem 1) being arranged in said cut-away part 0 substantially as shown in Fig. The said members 0 and c are then tightly closed down by pressure upon the opposite sides of the ribbon, where by the ribbon and its securing-pin are socurely connected with the said head-piece or top bar 0 and cannot become disconnected therefrom.
If desired the member 0 may be provided with serrations or holding-teeth 0 along its lower edge, which embed themselves firmly in the back of the ribbon a, when the members c and c are closed down, thereby serving as an extra means to prevent displacement of the head-piece from the ribbon a; but of course it will be evident that this arrangement of serrations or teeth is not absolutely necessary.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. A badge, comprisinga ribbon, and a stem for attaching said badge to a garment, said stem, consisting, essentially, of a main body portion having a pin-point at its lower end, and a cross-bar at the opposite end of said body portion, arranged at a right angle, or approximately so, to said main body portion, and a pin-point at the free end of said crossbar, said pin-point extending in a direction at right angles, or approximately so, away from said main body portion, for inserting it through said ribbon, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. Abadge, comprisinga ribbon, and a stem for attaching said badge to a garment, said stem, consisting, essentially, of a main body portion having a pin-point at its lower end, and a cross-bar at the opposite end of said body portion, said cross-bar having a pinpoint for inserting it through said ribbon, and a head-piece or top bar 0, comprising a pair of members 0 and c clampcd over the upper edge of said ribbon, and on opposite sides of said cross-bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A badge,coniprising a ribbon, and a stem for attaching said badge to a garment, said stem consisting, essentially, of a main body portion having a pin-point at its lower end, an arm at the upper end of said main body portion, extending therefrom at a right angle, or approximately so, and a cross-bar connected with said arm, said cross-bar having a pin-point for inserting it through said ribbon, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
