IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIG OILIlR-IEEDERS.
" tlp .sfigata-mata in it tipa itam patent ma mating part nf' tip same.-
TO ALL WHOM II MAY CONCERN:
Be itknownthat I, I'IIRAM BEADLE, of Washington, in the District of' Columbia, have invented a new and improved Automatic WaterFecder for Steam Generators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whichp v Figure 1 is au elevation, with parts represented as broken awa-y.
Figuref? is a vertical section of the'. induction valve. v I
The following descriptionnill enable one learned in the art to malte and apply my automatic,water-feeder.
A is a Water and steam chamber, into which the unter Ilows from a reservoir through the pipe B, in which is placed a valve, C, opening inwards. D is a condensing-chamber communicating with -the supply pipe Band v with the upper part of the supply-chamber. screw, DI, is placed .in the bottom ot' the condensing-chamber.
E is a lloat which may be of wood, but preferably a hollo'tv metallic drum should be used as-a float. This iloat rises and falls with lthe level of the water in the supply-chamber. The piston-rod F is attached to this float, passing through suitable stuihng-boxes in the ends of the chamber A. The collar FL is fastened upon this rod above thechamber. G is a sliding yoke7 through eyes in which the guides I-I pass, permitting a'. free vertical play to the yoke., The yoke is connected with the stems of the valves K and K by wires or rods I. The supplychamber A is connected with thel steam generator by the pipe L, which is so arranged that the bottom of the chamber shall be on the level of the loivovater line of the generator. An outwardly-opening valve is placed in the pipe L, at- M, which permits the waterto flow from the supply-chamber A into the generator. The pipe N leads from the steam-chamber ofthe generator to the upper part of the Vsupply-chamber; it is closed by a stopcock. The valve K, when opened, allows-the steam, to ilovr from the generator into the supply-chamber and the valve Kl, when opened, allows the steam `to passv from the receiving-chamber into the condenser D, and the-water to pass Ifrom the'condenser inte` the chaiziber A. A
The operation of this automatic feeder is as follows: supposing the boiler to be filled with water, and the steam to be raised to a propcrprcssure in the generator, the engineer raises the rod F and float E; the pipe B being opened, the water will flow into and iil'l the chamber A. The collar Fl will raise the yoke G, and open the steam .pipe K, closing at the same time the valve K1. The pipe N being/opened` by turning the steam-cock, the Water in the supply-chamber A will be` subjected to the same pressure as that in the boiler, and the valve C closed by the pressure. As thc water falls by evaporation in the boiler, it will be supplied by that flowing into the generator'fron th supply-chamber through the pipe'L, which opens below the surface of water in the generator. When theivaterjfalls in the generator so as to draw all the water from the supply-chamber, the float E and rod F falling with it, the collar Fl, striking upon the levers of the valve K and Kl, 'will bearthem down, closing the communication with the steamchamber of the generator, and opening that with thecondenser. The steamavhich ills the supply-chamber will` he immediately con'densed,'and the water ow i'n through the supply pipe B, filling the chamber A and raisingthe float E andA rod F, until the collar Fx raises the yoke G andcloses the-valve K1, and opens the valve K, when the operation already described is repeated.v A stop-cock is placed on the end of the` supply-chamber A. Through this the air will be permitted to escape on the entrance of the water4 in starting the apparatus. Where the reservoiris not above the supply-chamber, the steam must be admitted to-the supply-chamber in starting,l in order to commence the action of the apparatus, the rod F being' raised by hand. When the cylinder A is `filled with steam, the rod is pressed down so as to'close the Steam valve K and open the valve K1, and the automatic action. of the apparatus 4Will be thereafter continued.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the pipe B, condenser D, valve C, pipes/I and N, with referenceto the chamber A and float E, substantially as vherein set forth. i' I 2. The combination of the supply pipe B, valve G, and chamber A, with the ioat E,rod F, and valves K and K1, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
3. The combination of the rod F, yoke G, rods I, and valves K and K1, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tti-this speciticationin the presence of two subscribing wtnessesi .HIRAM BE ABLE.
