LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,651, dated October 26, 1880.
Application filed April 14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELISHA WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State ot'Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a partial side elevation and vertical section of the lubricator embodying; my invention.
My invention relates to certain improvements in lubrieators, wherein the oil or lubricant is directed from the cup or cylinder to the place of service in uniform regulated quantities by the action of condensed steam admitted to the cup or cylinder, the construc tion and operation being hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the cup or cylinder, which is provided with a bracket, (1, or other means for supporting and sustaining it in position.
B represents a tube, closed at top, vertically supported within the cylinder A, and having an upper branch, I), and lower branch, 0, the upper branch leading outside the cylinder, and having connected to it a pipe, 0, communicating with a steam boiler or generator. The lower branch, 0, receives a valve or valvular rod, D, which covers and uncovers a vent, (7, formed in the branch 0, and opening into the cylinder A.
E represents a pipe communicating with the cylinder A by means of a con'nectiomf, and elbow-pipef at the top of said cylinder, and likewise with the engine, and having a cock, E, above which is a nozzle, E, projecting into said pipe E, the nozzle E having a narrow bore.
F represents the gage connected to the cylinder for indicating the height or condition of oil therein.
The operation is as follows: The valve D, which is formed of a screw-rod, is rotated in order, to close the vent d. The top plug or cap, 0, is removed, and the cup or cylinder A (No model.)
supplied to full extent with the oil or lubricant, after which said plug or cup is reapplied. The valve D is then opened to full extent, and as steam leaves the boiler through the pipe 0 and condenses the water of condensation, backed by steam in the pipe, enters the cylinder and exerts its pressure on the oil therein from below, whereby the oil is displaced and seeks an outlet through the pipe E. 'The oil escapes in drops through the nozzle E, and,o\ving to its buoyancy, rises in the pipe E, and is thus conveyed to the part of the engine or other mechanism to be lubricated.
It will be noticed that the feed of oil is uniform, and may be regulated with nicety by proper adjustment of the cock E, the oil being under great pressure in the cylinder from below and restrained by the nozzle E above, the adjustment being, however, by the cock E, as has been stated.
The height of the oil and water is exhibited in the gage F. When the oil is expended the cylinder is replenished and the operations are repeated, as hereinbefore stated.
The water of condensation of steam in the pipe E is prevented from entering the cup or cylinder A, owing to the constantly-full condition of the latter, it being well known in lubricators for steam-engines that both of the pipes O E communicate with the steam.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cup or cylinder A, in combination with the inclosed tube B, connected to the steampipe 0, and having an outlet-vent, d, the valve D, and the discharge-pipe E, with connections ff, and having the nozzle E and adjustingcock E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
