Be it known that 1, JAMES L. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cigar Cutter and Stamper, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in a device to be used for cutting off the ends of cigars, so that they may be of a desired length,and for impressing on the wrapper of the cigar a name by which it may be known to the trade; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a combined cigar cutter and stamper which shall be simple and inexpensive in con; struction, strong, durable, effective, and satisfactory in operation, and, second, to' furnish a combined cigar cutter and Stamper in which the operation of cutting the cigar and stamping or impressing a name thereon will be done instantaneously and at the same time. 7

Other objects and advantages of my invention will appearin the description hereinafter contained.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and" use the same, I will nowproceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which r Figure 1 is a plan view'of my cutter and Stamper, showing the parts thereof in the positions they will occupy when ready for use. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, partly in elevation, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the upper front portion of the dieholding frame; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the adjustable gage, showing it detached. 7 y

A represents the main or supporting frame, which may be made of any suitable size,-

form, and material, but preferably-0f castiron and substantially rectangular in form, as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and is supported atsuitableheight by means of legs a at each of its corners.

The front of the frame A is formed or provided with a trough B, which extends from 'one of its ends to about its middle and is for the purpose of holding the cigar while it is being'stamped and cut. Fixed to the outer end of the trough B is a blade b, which has a semicircular recess in its upper portion. Se-

cured to the lower surface of the trough B is a gage or measuring piece 0, which is prolowing it to be adjusted, so that the cigars 'may be cut at a proper length.

The rear upper portion of the main frame A'is provided'with lugs a and 11 to the former of which is pivotally secured, by means of a screw-bolt a an arm 01 and to the other an extension d of the frame D, which is substantially rectangular in shape and has in its front portion a dovetail mortise afor the reception 'of'a correspondingly-shaped plate E, to the lower surface of whichis secured, by .means of a bolt e, passing th'erethrough, a

die E, of any suitable or desired characters or letters. This die is preferably separated from the plate E by mea'ns'of a piece of as-- bestos e? or other n n-heat-conducting material and projects through the slot 6 in the front portion of the frame D,-which holds or carries the die in its securing-plate, which plate is retained in position by means of a set-screw 6 located in the front portion ofthe frame D and extending into the mortise or groove 8, which receives the securing-plate. The end of the frame D adjacentto the blade I) on the main or supporting frame is provided with a blade d having in-its lower portiona curved recess to register with the recess in the lower blade. The frame D is preferably formed with a downtnrned portion (i to which the blade 0 may be secured; but

said blade may be secured to the frame in any other suitable manner. The upper front portion of the frame D is provided with a knob g, which is preferably separated from the frame D by means of a piece of asbestos It or other suitable material to prevent the knob from becoming heated, which knob is to be used when it is desired to stamp or cut the cigar. Passing through the frame D near its outer end is a screw h, whose lower end will strike the upper surface of the main frame when the cigar is being-cut or the impression made thereon, and the depth of said impression may be regulated by turning said screw, as is apparent. The rear portion of the frame D, opposite the extension d, is provided with an extension d having a slot (1 to receive a set-screw d, which engages the arm 61, thus allowing the frame D to be adjusted, so that the blade 61 which said frame carries, will fit properly against the blade I) on the main frame. The extension d of the frame D is provided with a hook m, to which is secured one end of a spring m, whose other end is secured to the lower portion of one of the legs a of the main frame, said spring being employed for the purpose of normally holding the frame in a raised position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Secured to the rear portion of the main frame is a post N, whose upper end is provided with an opening through which is passed a gas-pipe n, which communicates at one of its ends with a supply of gas and is provided at its other end with a tip n for the passage, of gas. The pipe or tube 71 is held in position bymeans of a set-screw n located in the upper portion of .the post N, which may be pivotally secured on the main frame, so as to allow it to be turned when required. Secured to the front end of the tube n is a hood R, which is provided with openings r and r for the passage of air and extends over the screw-bolt e when the die-holding frame D is in its normal position.

From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings it Will be seen and clearly understood that when it is desired to stamp or cut the cigar, or to do both at the same time, it is only necessary to place the cigar in the trough B, with its small end against the projection c of the gage-piece, which by loosening the thumb-screw C may be moved back or forth to the desired point. As the frame 1), which holds and carries the die E, is held in a raised position by means of the spring m, it is obvious that the die will become heated by reason of the flame emitted from the tube 02 against the bolt 6, which holds the die in place, and that by placing the hand on i the knob g the frame maybe pressed down, so that the die will contact with the Wrapper of the cigar, thus forming an impression thereon, and at the same time the blades d and b will be brought in juxtaposition to cut the end of the cigar.

As before stated, the stroke of the frameD may be regulated by means of the screw h, so that the die mayact properly on cigars of different sizes. It is apparent that by loosening the screw e the plate E, to which the die is secured, may be adjusted within the mortise or groove 6 for cigars of different lengths.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a main or supporting frame provided with a trough at its front portion, of a blade at the end of said trough, an arm d, pivotally secured on the rear portion of the main frame, a spring-actuated frame pivotally secured at one of its ends to the rear portion of the main frame, and having the extension (1 formed with the slot 01 at its other-rear end, and adjustably secured to the arm cl, and provided in its front portion with a mortise or groove, a plate adjustably secured in said mortise or groove, a die secured to said plate, a blade secured to the die-holding frame and means to heat the die, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a main or supporting frame provided with a trough at its front portion, with an arm d, pivotally secured on the rear portion of the main frame, a springactuated frame pivotally secured at one of its ends to the rear portion of the main frame and having the extension (1 formed with the slot d at its other rear end and adjustably secured to the arm 61, and provided in its front portion with a mortise or groove, a plate adj ustably secured in said mortise or groove,

a die secured to said plate, an upright post on the rear portion of the main frame and having an opening in its upper portion, a gaspipe adjustably secured in said opening, a hood secured to the front portion of the gaspipe and extending forwardly therefrom over the die-carrying plate, and having openings for the passage of air, substantially as described.
