Car Coupling.
Patehted Mar. 19.1867.
AM. PHOTO-LITHO.0. N.I.(QSBORNE'S PROCESS.)
first ITHAMAR IV. STUART, JR, OF-GHARLOTTESVILLE, INDIANA. Letters Patent No. 62,978, dated Ztfarch 19, 136
. IMPROVED GAR-GOUPLING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ITHAMAR \V. STUART, Jr., of Charlottesville, in the county of Hancock, and State of I Indiana, have invented .'a new and useful improvement in Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use-the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which The drawing represents my improved coupling, as attached to two adjacent cars, partly in section to show the construction. I
My'invention has for its object to furnish a convenient and reliable means for coupling and uncoupling cars without its being necessary to go between the cars for that purpose; and it consists in the form of the bumperhead, and in the combination therewith, and with the draught-bar and endot' the car, of a coupling link, chain, guurd-latchet, and armed bar, as hereinafter more fully described I A representsthe ends of two adjacent cars to be coupled, Brepresents the draught-bars, and C the bumper heads. The bumper-heads C are made in hook form or with upwardly projecting parts or arms. -D is a bar or red extending up vertically along the end of the car, as shown, so as to be reached and operated from the top of said ear. To the lower end of the rod or bar D is attached an arm, d, which, when the rod or bar is pushed down, rests upon the upper side of the draught-bur B, as shown in the drawing. The arm d is of such alength that its forward end enters and works in a slot formed in the inner side of the hook or. arm of the bumper-head C. The
lower end of the rod or bar D projects below the arm :2 and enters anotehsor mortise'formed in the draught-bar B. cl is an arm attached to thebar D a little distanceabove the top of the bumper-head O, to the projecting end of which is pivoted'a balance-latehet or guard, E, the lower end of which hangs in such a position that when the bar D is lowered it enters the groove in the inner side of the bumper-head G and prevents the removal .of the link until the bar D has been raised. d is a stop pin, which enters a slot inthee-nd of the car A, or in the standard against which the bar I) is placed, and prevents the said bar from being moved too far in either direction. F is the coupling-link, which passes througha hole in the draught-bar B, as shown in the drawing. G is a chain, the ends of which are attached to the sides of the link F, and the middle part of which passes'through a hole in the forward end of then-rm d. The length of the chain may be regulated so as to raise the link F to any desired height. v
In coupling the cars the bar D is raised, which raises the free end of the link above the bumper-head C; then, as the cars cometogether, thebarD is lowered; .the end of the link, striking against the latchet or guard E, by its weight pushes the said latchet out of the. way and drops over the hook of the bumper-head G, the end of the latehet E at the same time entering the groove in the said bumper-head and guarding against the links escaping therefrom. In uncoupling the cars all that is necessary is toraise the bar D; this lifts the link F above the end of the bumper-head, so that when the cars separate the said linkmay slide ofi'.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The bumper-head 0, when formed with an upwardly projecting part or hook grooved upon its inner 4 side, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bar D, arms d and d balance-guard E, chain G, and link F, with each other, with the bumper C, draught-bar B, and end of the car A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pnrposes set forth. v v.
ITHAMAR W. STUART, JR.
