UNITED STATES PATENT Genres,
FRANZ PRASIL, OF ZURICH, SWITZERLAND;
TURBINE.-
sPEcIFIcA'rIoiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,700, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed September 24, 1898. Serial No. 691,798. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ PRASIL, a sub ject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Zurich, in the Republic of Switzerland, have invented new and. useful Improvements in Turbines, (for which I applied for a patent in Switzerland on the 10th of March, 1898, and in Germany on the'l9th of March, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to turbines; and it has for its object the provision of means whereby the velocity of flow under a given head or pressure of Water is materially increased before acting upon the turbine driving-wheel, whereby the power exerted by the latter is correspondingly increased.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a turbine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View ofv onehalf of the fixed directing-Wheel. Fig. 3 is a like view showing part of the intermediate revoluble bucket-wheel and part of the driving-wheel. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional View illustrating the construction and relative arrangement of the inner buckets of the nonre voluble or distributing wheel and the corresponding buckets of the intermediate revoluble wheel and of the driving-wheel; and Fig.
5 is a similar view illustrating the construc-. t1on and relative arrangement of the outer buckets of the non-revoluble wheel and the like buckets of the intermediate revoluble Wheel.
Referring to Fig. 1, H indicates the cylindrical housing which receives the water from an overhead supply, said housing being secured to a base-ring c, itself supported by suitable means at a proper elevation above the level U W of discharge, and to said basering is secured a distrib uting-wheel 0, having two circular rows of buckets O and G the buckets O of the inner circle of such having vertical directing-Walls, while the buckets G of the outer circle are constructed to discharge forwardly.
In a suitable step d is stepped the drivingshaft a, which passes freely through a tubular shaft 1), to the lower end of which is secured the intermediate bucket-wheel B, said shaft being supported above the upper water-level wheels.
tributing-wheel O. The revoluble intermediate bucket-wheel B has also two concentric series of buckets B and B the inner buckets B being constructed to discharge forwardly and receive the water from the inner circle of bucketsG of the distributing-wheel O.
The outer buckets B of the revoluble wheel B are constructed to discharge the water received from the outer buckets O of the wheel 0 backwardly, Figs. 4 and 5.
To the shaft Ct below bucket-wheel B is secured the drive-wheel A, having but one circular series of buckets A, which receive the water from the inner buckets B of the intermediate bucket-wheel B, said buckets A discharging backwardly. The construction of the buckets of these wheels is well, known, but their relative arrangement is such as to increase the velocity of flow .under a given head or pressure before acting upon the driving-wheel. Both wheels A and B are impulse- The water from the forwardly-discharging outer buckets C of the distributing- Wheel 0 acts upon the backwardly-discharging outer buckets B of the intermediate wheel B,while the water flowing straight down the inner buckets O of said distributing-wheel G acts upon the corresponding forwardly-discharging buckets B of the intermediate wheel, and these latter again discharge into the backwardly-discharging buckets A of the drive-wheel A, whereby the speed of the flow of water acting upon the buckets A of wheel A is materially increased, so that the drivewheel will revolve at a greater speed under a given head or fall of water than would be the case otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A turbine comprising a non-revoluble distributing-wheel having two concentric series of buckets, a driving-wheel havinga single series of buckets, and an intermediate Wheel having two concentric series of buckets and revolving independently of the drivingwheel, the buckets of said wheels constructed to drive the intermediate and driving wheels in one and the same direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a turbine, the combination of a nonrevoluble bucket-Wheel, a driving bucketwheel, and an intermediate bucket-wheel revoluble independently of said drivingwheel, said intermediate wheel having buckets discharging forwardly into backwardlydischarging buckets of the driving-wheel,said non-revoluble wh eel having buckets disch arging vertically into the forwardly-discharging buckets of the intermediate wheel, and said non-revoluble wheel having a second series of buckets discharging forwardly into a corresponding series of backWardly-discharging buckets of the intermediate Wheel, for the purpose set forth.
' In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
