To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. RANsoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Bethel, in the county ofNorthampton and State of Pennsylvania,have. invented new and useful Improvements in Turbine l/Vater-Wheels, of which the. ollowing is aspecification.- f 'I This invention relates to new.v and useful improvements in turbine water wheels andl the principal objectof the. invention is to provide a numberjof wheels, one located above the other and4 so constructed thatr the water leaving one Wheel .will react on the next one. A,
Another object of the invention is to reduce the number of movable parts to a minimum byconnecting the wheels directly to the driving shaft by suitable gearing.
Y Another object of rthe invention is to provide a device of this character which issimf ple and -durable in construction, reliable and` eflcient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which r*- f Figure 1 is an elevation with tion and parts broken away.

As shown in these views VI locate a casing 1 between the ends of the upper and lower portions of the fiume or penstock 2. Flanges 2 are formed on the ends of these portions and said casing is made of greater diameter than the flume so as to rest between said flanges. The said casing and `iianges are parts in secsecured together by suitable bolts as indicated at 2x. The casing receives a pair of water wheels, the upper one of which is indicated by the numeral 3 and the lower one by the numeral Y4. Thislowerwh'eel 4 has Vsecured thereto a cylindricalaxle, 5 having a conical top 6 and a plate 7 secured to its bottom. y The said .wheelis provided with ,an annular recess 8 atits upper end inits internal wallwhich receives the reduced ,lower end 9 of the upper wheel 9. This upper wheel is provided. with the hub 10 which ts over theaxle 5. These wheels are provided with bucketsll formed of curved plates and the buckets on'j one wheel are OPPOSitely arranged in respect to those on the other wheel. The lower wheel is provided with a beveled gearf12 at its lowerend whilethe upper wheelis provided withv ajlikegear 13 at its 4upperend :and abovethis gear isv rarranged a'ia'nge 14 which is located between the upper part of the casing and the flange r2 of. the upper ,part of the flume. SuitableV anti-friction devices may-be located between these parts to reduce friction. As will be seen the cone shaped upper end of the cylindrical axle extends above the casing into the lower end of the upper part of the Hume and this end supports a cone shaped deflector 15 provided with the curvedV plates 16 forming curved channels for Vdirecting the water into the bucketsV of the rst wheel. As will be noted the channels in the deiector will direct the water on to the buckets of the rst wheel at substantially a right angle thereto while 'the water leaving the first wheel will strike the buckets of the second wheel at substantially a right angle. The casing 1 at one side is provided witha attened part 17 provided with a journal for the drive sha'ft 18. At its inner end this shaft is provided with a beveled gear 19 meshingv with the bevels on the upper and lower wheels so that power is transmitted from said wheels to said shaft. This power may be transmitted to any suitable machinery by means of a belt engaging a pulley 20 or by any other suitable means.
The water ilowing through the flume will strike the deiiector which will Jforce the. water toward the sides of the 'flume and due to the inclination of the channels in said on to the buckets of the lower' Wheel so that this wheel Will travel in the same direction as the deflector. As the last Wheel and the deflector are secured togetherv these tWpo parts Will move as one. The formation of the buckets and channels will cause the Water to follow a zigzag path through the apparatus. In order to have the upper and lower beveled gears move at the same rate of speed the depth of theJ first wheel may be adjusted relative to the lower Wheel to cause the Water to move. said Wheel at the same rate of speed as the lower Wheel.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5. a second pair of Wheels 20 and 21 are located below the first pair and the aXles 22 are each provided With a beveled gear 23 oppositely arranged With the outermost gears engaging agear 25A carried by. the shaft 18. In other respects this construction is similar to that just described. y
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts, provided that such V'changes fall Within'the scope ofthe appended claims.
What I claim is:-
l. A device of the class described comprising a number of Water Wheels having buckets oppositely arranged 'so that one Wheel Will be rotated in a direction opposite to that of the next Wheel, gears carried on the periphery of each of said Wheels, a shaft and a gear thereon meshing with said gears.
2. A device of ythe class described comprising a Hume, ay casing located in said flume, a number of turbine Wheels in said casing7 a hub connected With one Wheel and with which the other Wheel engages, a flange on theupper Wheel engaging the top of the 'casingJ a shaft, andttransmission means connecting said shaft With the Wheels.
3. A device of the class described comprisingr a flume7 a casing connected there- With, Water Wheels in said casing having their buckets oppositely disposed', a hub connected with one Wheel and engaged by the other Wheel, and a deflector connected With the Vtop of the hub and having channels therein for directing the Water on to the buckets of the first Wheel at an angle thereto..
